his six-cylinder Rambler Sun
day to hold the lead, followed
by Detroit's Mary Hauser and
her Chevy II. she made a
fractional gain on Viland by
averaging 28 15 miles per
gallon for the 565 miles from
Los Angeles to Cedar City,
Utah.
The cars, all with automa
tic transmission, moved into
Utah from Las Vegas under
warm spring skies but buffet
ed by gusty desert winds.
The eight women and 2!)
men drivers have averaged
21.61 miles per gallon for the
run, with the women drivers
making better than two miles
per gallon more than the
men.

Whooping Crane
Shatters Eggs

phine the whooping crane has
cracked three of her eggs and
shattered immediate hopes
for an increase in the number
of the almost extinct birds,
according to Audubon park
officials.
George Douglas, director of
the park where Josephine and
her mate, Crip, are kept, said
he hopes she will lay one or
two more eggs this spring.
Josephine and Crip are the
only two whooping cranes
ever to have mated in cap
tivity. They have produced
four offspring.
The flock of wild whoop
ing cranes has dwindled to
an estimated 42 birds. The
cranes, which teach a wing
span of seven feet, spend!
their winters in the Arkansas
national wildlife refuge on
the Texas gulf coast and thcii
summers at a lake in north
ern Canada.
National Debt Ceiling
Declines $305 Billion

debt dropped to S305 billion
today from the S308 limit
permitted since July 1. But
it will not stay at the lower
level very long.

las Dillon has told Congress
that for the fiscal year start
ing July 1 the debt limit will
