Old Theater Organ Moved to Portland for Use in Private Home
v , , An old theater organ, the
,-lst of its kind in southern
' Oregon, has been moved to
Portland, where it will be
! installed in a private home
: following renovation.
' The Wurlitzer organ was
hipped to the new Craterian
; theater in Medford Aug. 18,
.1924. It remained there, pro
viding the sound tor silent
j films and (or concerts, until
February, 1963. In recent
years it remained silent ex
cept for the occasional thea
' ter organ enthusiast who was
, allowed to play it when the
' theater wasn't in use.
According to Robert Cor
i bin, general manager of the
theater, there were between
; 15 and 20 organists who used
It.
, Purchased by Portlander
The pipe organ was remov-
ed after it was purchased by
Robert J. Burke, a Portland
Jnsuranceman. The Craterian
; theater recently underwent
' remodeling, and if it had not
been sold, the organ would
; have been walled in, it was
-j noted.
Burke, who described him-
aelf as a pipe organ "nut,"
' was in Medford and with
;. friends removed the five tons
' of pipes, organ and miscel
laneous accessories in three
,iays. .
i "It is in remarkable condi
. tion," Burke said.
"The Honduras mahogany
1 console will havo to be re-
finished and some of the leath-
er straps have been chewed
'. by mice,'! he said, "but as
( aoon as it is renovated it will
-, be installed in my home."
i Original Pipes
!" The hundreds 'of pipes are
I the original ones which came
l with the organ in 1924. Some
, are of pure tin, so soft they
presented a problem in pack-
ing, Burke noted. Others are
of heavy lead, wood and zinc.
According to information
received by Burke from the
; American Organ Enthusiasts
.association, the organ is Style
D of Opus 878.
The three manual pipe or
; gan has eight sets of tonal
qualities including the trum
pet, open diapason, tibia, oboe,
' kinura, flute,, box -humana,
' and strings. ' ,

PIPE ORGAN REMOVED Five Ions of
pipes, organ and accessories were moved
from the Craterian theater recently after
the old theater pipe organ was sold to
Robert J. Burke (above), Portland. Each
article of the organ was carefully removed
prior to packing for the trip north. The
row of pipes, visibale above Burke's head,
are the cylinders behind the 49-note chyso
glott bar celeste. In the foreground on the
theater floor are the flutes.
The unit also included a
complete 49-note chysoglott
bar celeste. Behind each bar
is a tuned cylinder, which,
when struck, produces a tin
kling hollow tone, Burke ex
plained. There is also a 27
note glockenspiel, a 37-note
xylophone, and an 18-note
set of chimes. '
Other Instruments
Other instruments includ
ed in the unit are bass, kettle
and snare drums, torn torn.
cymbals, crash cymbals, tri
angle, tambourine, castanets,
Chinese block, and sound ef
fects including the surf, auto
horn, door bell, and a bird
whistle.
While many theater goers
will not notice the absence
of the pipe organ, many local
organ enthusiasts expressed
disappointment that it was
leaving southern Oregon.
The newly remodeled the
ater opened March 15 and
has new seats of rust color.
