Choosing a college is a
major decision. The correct
choice ifc casic to an enjoyable
and profitable experience. The
wrong choice may be unpleas
ant.
A student who wants to
attend a college should begin
a careful evaluation during
his junior year in high school,
or earlier. The first step is an
accurate and realistic look at
his interests, achievements,
and abilities. He should con
sider the probable course of
study to be follewed. What are
his cultural and social
interests.
Consultation Urgtd
Parents and students should
consult with their high school
advisors.
Each institution has catalogs
and brochures which explain
requirements, courses and
procedures. These will give a
general idea of the type of
college. A letter will bring
answers to additional ques
tions. If possible, a trip to the
campus and a chat with one
of the staff members can be
helpful. Perhaps a friend has
attended the college and can
give some information.
The college advisor in a
high school is familiar with
many colleges. A talk with him
can often save many hours of
reseach. -
The most important objec
tive is to find a college which
meets the students needs
Make sure that a good variety
of courses are offered in the
area of major Interest. A limit
ed number of basic courses
will not be sufficient. Consid
er the college's prestige in re
lation to this area.
Unquestionably, there is an
increasing competition for
admission to colleges. A stu
dent's chances for acceptance
will be increased by a
thorough Investigation. A col
lege which meets his needs
will more likely want him as
a student.
There are several deadlines
to meet when applying for
admission. These vary with
different colleges. Make sure
there is sufficient time to com
plete all applications and
examinations. High schools
need time to forward tran
scrips and records. Obtaining
letters of recommendation al
so takes time. Be sure to meet
the deadlines.
Some Rejections
In some cases, application
may actually be made during
the junior year. An accep
tance may be obtained which
is conditional upon perform
ance in the senior year.
Many individuals will re
ceive some rejections. Com
petition is strong. Colleges
attempt to choose students
who seem to have the best
chances for success.
Assistance in finding coll
leges with openings can be
obtained from various organi
zations which act as clearing
houses. They will try to match
students with appropriate
openings. These agencies can
be located by checking with
high school advisors, public
libraries, newspaper informa
tion services, and other local
directories.
Admission to college can be
difficult, so approach the task
with a well organized plan.
