Use of Cigarettes
Expected To Gain
Washington - (UPD - The Ag
riculture Department said to
day cigarette production and
consumption in 1963 are ex
pected to show only modest
gains over the record 1962
highs.
In 1962 U.S. smokers con
sumed nearly 508' i billion
cigarettes - narly 534 billion
more than in 1961. The an
nual increase was consider
ably less than f-r each of the
previous seven years. In fact,
cigarette consumption per
capita (IS years and over) de
clined seven-tenths of 1 per
cent from 1961 to '962 in
contrast with signifi ant in
creases each year sine i 1954.
In a review of the tobacco
situation, the department said
the considerable decline last
year probably was due in
large part to reactions to the
widespread publicity concern
ing cigarette-smoking and
health.
