lean homeowners bought
more built-in gas ranges, gas
clothes dryers and central
heating gas boilers in 1982
than in any previous year,
the Gas Appliance Manufac
turers ' association reports.
Preliminary year-end esti
mates show sales of the three
types of home equipment
were 6.6, 13.1 and 4.2 per
cent, respectively, above 1061
levels.
Sam McKinncy, Portland
who is promoting the music
festival on the Britt estate
will be Introduced. Don Tru
deau, leader of the Portland
Symphony, also is expected to
attend. Everyone is asked to
bring his own table service,
covered dish, dessert or salad.
During Tuesday night's Sis
kiyou Pioneer Sites Founda
tion meeting it was reported
$148 was netted from a recent
rummage sale.
A total of $212 in colored
slides with a taped commen
tary is almost completed for
use of various civic organiza
tions to promote Jackson
ville's historic sites, Founda
tion President Jack Sutton
said.
Visit Jacksonville
Two representatives of the
Urban Renewal program visit
ed Jacksonville recently and
indicated the core develop
ment area would be the cen
tral area of the town. Sutton
was retained by the Jackson
ville citizens' steering commit
tee and the city of Jackson
ville to prepare an application
for federal assistance under
the program;
The city is expected to par
ticipate through its projected
sewer, street and sidewalk
improvements.
Emphasis will be placed on
restoring the area to its origi
nal condition. The existing
building code will , insure
greater permanence of im
provements, it was pointed
out.
Intent of Program
Intent of urban renewal is
to restore the core area so it
would become a taxable asset
of the community. This is the
only project of its kind on
(he west coast, it was pointed
out. It calls for individual
architecture for each building
which would be restored and
the various business buildings
would be brought back to an
active commercial life in the
community.
Sutton also was authorized
to represent the foundation at
the Pacific Northwest History
conference at Tacoma, Wash.,
April 18, 19 and 20.
Arthur Chipman, Medford,
reported the Cold Rush flap
jack breakfast would be held
in the Jacksonville communi
ty hall on Sunday, April 28,
from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enter
tainment will be provided.
Report on Project
George Brewer, Jackson
ville, reported on the Britt
Music Festival project which
he said is progressing. The
Britt home area is being clean
ed up for construction of a
band-shell. A number of mu
sicians from other areas have
indicated an interest in par
ticipating in the event for the
latter two weeks of August.
Brewer suggested the vari
ous civic organizations be con
tacted to care for various pio
neer graves in the Jackson
ville cemetery. Lee Pinkham,
Medford, is chairman of a
committee to select the graves
which would be cared for by
the Sites foundation.
Jack Sutton and Dr. Arthur
Taylor, Ashland, will prepare
a detailed story of the pioneer
cemetery and its significance
and historic interest.
Sutton commended the
county court for its interest
and help with the Beckman
house.
