Electronics
Could Replace
Researchers
Beverly Hills, Calif.- (UPD
The lawyer doing research by
plodding through volumes of
law books may be replaced
in the future by an electronic
process taking five minutes at
the most.
The machine is called Law
staff and its inventor is Alvin
: Gershenson, an attorney who
; founded the Electronics corpo.
ration of America two years
ago.
,' Gershenson Is trying to in
terest lawyers and district aU
torneys in California to con
tract his electronic law
brary which he says can save
85 per cent of time spent on
research.
Many court cases are con
tinued because preparatory
research is not completed
Gershenson said his firm has
all documents pertaining to
California criminal law on file
and available to be repro.
duced within seconds or min
utes. depending on the volume
requested on any legal sub
ject.
The firm president said he
also has a complete file on
Nevada statutes, codes and
cases.
Clients who pay attorneys
money for research time
would benefit by the high
speed system and taxpayers
in general would get more
for their money if deputy dis
trict attorneys were freed
from fulltime research work,
Gershenson said.
The only Lawslaff now In
operation is at the corpora
tion's Wilshlre Boulevard of
fice. The cost for charter
members is $25 a month, in
cluding servicing, and 25
cents per page.
Under the present setup, a
contracting attorney would
telephone. or mail a request
to the Lawstaff center.
If statutes and leading cases
were sought on search and sei
zure, for instance, buttons
would be pressed to the code
number for "search and sei
zure." Then buttons for "sta
tutes" and "leading cases" are
pressed. There is also an "all'
button-for every state legal
document of the subject.
Pages appear on the ma
chine's screen and another
button is pushed to produce
a facsimile which glides Into
a trough. , '
