The last 27 of the island
prison's 2(10 - inmate popula
tion were removed Thursday
and transtcrred to other in

Those 27 left the easy way
by boat. During its 20 years
as the home of the federal
government's most hardened
convict?, seven inmates were
shot and killed, six drowned
or were believed to have
drowned, 'and 26. were seized

smuggler from Anchorage,
Alaska, named Frank C.
Weatherman had the distinc
tion of being the last Inmate
off Alcatraz. A newsman

for everyone. Alcatraz never
was no good." the 20-year-old
convict replied.
Alcatraz was opened In
1034 to house incorrigibles
during the wave of gangland
violence that followed the
end of prohibition.
The decision to abandon the
2!-ycnr-nld prison in San
Francisco ISay was prompted
by its deterioration from ;.ge
and salt air. Federal officials
said it would cost $5 million
to renovate it.
Dig Through Wall
The condition of the prison
was dramatized last June
when three bank robbers used
sharpened spoons to dig
through rotting concrete at
the back of their cells and
fled the island. Officials are
convinced they drowned, al
though their bodies were
never found. -
But the . most' spectacular
escape attempt was the May
2, 1046 "Battle of Alcatraz"
witnessed for two days by
thousands from the hills of
San Francisco.
Navy destroyers circled the
Island, U.S. Marines stormed
ashore and fighter planes
zoomed low overhead as nine
inmates attempted to "blast
out" of a three-tiered cell-block.
But they were thwarted
when a captured guard man
aged to hide an all-important
key; he was beaten and killed
when the prisoners tried un
successfully to force him to
reveal the hiding pla.j.
Two other officers were
slain and a third critically
wounded: three inmates died
In the battle and two were
later executed.
By 1070, the Census bureau
says, there will be more than
!0 million persons In the
United Slates 65 years of age
and over, compared with the
present 17 million.

Ethiopia flew back to his capital of Addis Araba last night
after a six-day private visit to Switierland.
EX PRESIDENT OF TURKEY RELEASED
Istanbul, Turkey-WPD-Former President Celal Bayar, who
was imprisoned for life for violating the Turkish Constitution,
today was released for six months because of his ill health.
The government freed the 80-year-old former leader from
Kayseri prison so he could go home to his family in
Ankara.

Several contracts were
awarded by the Mcdford city
council last nighi.
Courtesy Chevrolet, with a
low bid of $5,200.68. minus
$R00 trade-in allowance, was
awarded a contract for three
one-half ton pick-up trucks.
It was one of five bids re
ceived. Awarded the contract' for a
new dump truck was Jay
Allen company with a low
bid of $4,833.80 minus $760
trade-in allowance. It was one
of five bids received.
Signal Oil company bid
low. and was awarded the
contract for a 12 months sup.

bid was $18,948.75. Five other
firms submitted bids.
Crater Lake Motors was

Bali May Be Termed
A Disaster Area
' Jakarta. Indonesia - WPI) -President
Sukarno today was
reported planning to desig
nate as a national disaster
area the exotic island of Bali,
where a volcanic eruption has
caused casualties in the hun
dreds.
The Indonesian Welfare de
partment said officially the
eruption of Gunune Agung
volcano killed or injured al
least 400 persons, but indi
cated the toll may be much
higher. Officials said precise
figures were hard to obtain
because of poor communica
tions with the stricken area.
Unofficial reports put the
dead at from 150 to 700 and
at least 1,500 others injured.
More than 1,000 homes were
destroyed.
The Indonesian air force
and Red Cross joined hands
to send tons of food, medi
cine and other relief supplies
to the stricken island, about
600 miles east of here.
