Deer Starving
In Northeast
Oregon Area
Enterprise, Ore.-WPD-Large
numbers of deer were found
dead or dying recently in the
Snake river country of north
east Oregon, a State Game
Commission biologist said to
day. Lack of food was blamed.
Bob Stein, district game
biologist here, made a s'irvey
of the area on horseback.
He reported that most of
the live deer observed appear
ed in an emaciated condition,
The area in which winter
losses occurred is near the
jg60 Pony Creek-Waterspout
Creek burn which covered
11,000 acres. No browse re-
vegetation has occurred
the site, Stein said.
The commission said that
In other areas of the state
winter losses appear light.

McArthur Court, Univer
sity of Oregon, Eugene - The
Medford High school Black
Tornado overcame the upset
ambitious Lebanon Warriors
here last night in a hectic
overtime embroilment to ad
vance to Thursday quarter
finals in the Oregon Class
A-l basketball tournament.
Score was 67 to 63.
Jumping Jim Hill javelined
in a rebound bucket for Med
ford's go-ahead points with
45 seconds left in the extra
session. Jack Forde, tremen
dous with 32 points for the
night, added a dash of savor
ing salt with another rebound
basket on his missed gift toss
with one second left to play.
The Tornadoes, among the
tourney favorite teams, had
to come from behind to tie it
in the fourth quarter and to
win it in the extra canto
against a fired, persistent
Warrior aggregation. Lebanon
fought from nine points down
in the third period to make
it a nip and tuck skirmish
down to the final buzzer.
Victory carried the Torna-
do into a 3 p.m. game on
Thursday against North Eu
gene which defeated Mar
shall of Portland, 63 to 66 in
the other Tuesday night first
round fray also on overtime.
Lebanon will face Marshall
at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in con
solation quarterfinals.
The teams went in to the
extra panel knotted at 61
each. Lebanon's Dave Sturgis
made it 63 to 61 for his club
with a tip shot 10 seconds
after the session began. As
soon as the Warriors went on
offense again, they turned to
ball control. But, a pass mis
fired and Medford had the
ball out of bounds. With 1:40
remaining Forde put in a
turning jumper to once more
deadlock the fracas.
Still playing for the good
shot, the Valley league team
worked the ball. But, Sturgis
fouled Medford's Gibb Mitch
ell underneath the Warrior
cage. Mitchell's shot with 48
seconds left missed but Hill
nabbed the ball and whipped
through the hoop for Coach
Frank Roelandt's Southern
Oregon conference co-cham-
pions.
Lebanon was not out ol It
vet. However, a missed War
rior shot was rebounded by
a Medfordite with 18 seconds
left. Miles tried to control
the ball against a pressing
rival and it went out of
bounds. The Warriors of
Coach Barney Holland gained
possession. With seven sec
onds on the clock, Forde
broke up a Lebanon pass
Then, he was fouled by Tim
Blanchat. Forde missed the
free try but made the follow
goal and there was no more
time for the plucky Lebanese.
Forde, who hit eight for
10 from the field in the second
half and 11 of 14 for the
game along with 10 for 15
from the charity stripe, was
the game's high scorer. As a
kingpin for Medford in the
clutch he also lead Twister
rebound domination with 17
retrieves.
Sturgis headed Lebanon
with 18 points and clever-
working Blanchat had 17.
Hill scored 12 for Medford
and Miles 11. Ron Price put
in 12 for the Warriors and

ment 52 to 40. Rich Benner
cleared eight. Sturgis pulled
11 for the Valley loop repre
sentative. Price had nine and
Blanchat eight.
Lebanon pulled up from a
27 to 36 early third quarter
deficit to even the game at
45-all on a Price rebound.
Then Joslin put Lebanon on
top with steal and dri"e
for 47 to 45. Score was
knotted nine times after that,
eight times in the fourth
quarter. A Forde basket made
the third quarter standing
47-each.
Medford had the lead six
times in the quarter but the
Warriors went ahead 61 to
59 with 3:25 to go when
Steve Simpson goaled off a
Joslin feed. There was no
more scoring until Price foul
ed Forde on the Medfordites
driver effort with 59 seconds
left. The tallest Tornado
made both free tries which
sent the tangle into the extra
stanza.
Desperation Shot
The southern Oregonians
nabbed the ball on a missed
Sturgis shot with 13 seconds
left and took time out with
nine seconds on the clock
With five seconds left a Miles
to Hill pass went out' of
bounds. Lebanon called time
with three seconds to play.
A long desperation shot by
Simpson was short.
This is the way it went in
the fourth stanza up until the
time Simpson put Lebanon on
top:
Forde sank a rebound for
49 to 47 Medford. Price did
the same to tie the score. An
other Forde rebound was
matched by a Sturgis driver
Mike Neathamer scored on
free line range shot for Med
ford but Joslin countered
with a long push. Hill scored
on a Forde feed but Blanchat
and Sturgis free tosses tied it
at 55 apiece.
Forde scored on a Miles'
pass but Blanchat drove for
a Warrior basket. Lebanon
went: ahead briefly on an
other Joslin long shot. Then
Forde drove the base to tie
the game at 59.
Team Biases
The Warriors caught ablaze
as a whole team to overcome
their nine-point deficit. Jos
lin hit: from the slot and the
slick Blanchat swished
driver. Neathamer fired from
inside the circle for the Tor
nado for 38 to 31. Blanchat
tallied on a drive and on
fast break as the Warriors
waxed hot. Score was 38 to 35,
Forde stalled the Wilanv
erte valley five with a three
point play. Nevertheless, th
Lebanon splurge continued as
Price and Sturgis goaled.
Medford's lead was but 41 to
39. Miles held off Lebanon
with a hook and long push
but these were matched by
Joslin from the corner and
Simpson from the side. Then
the Price bucket made it
45 each.
Lebanon had the best of
it scorewise in the first quar
ter with three-point leads of
9 to 6 and 11 to 8 but the
Whirlwind seemed to gain in
aggressiveness as Neathamer
and Mitchell entered the ac
tion. First quarter wound up
11 to 10 for the District 8
Lebanese. After a 13 to 10
Warrior lead, Medford fought
in front.
Tornado Goes Ahead
Forde tossed in two free
shots and Hill tabulated on
Forde assist for a 14 to 13
edge. Lebanon went on top
again 15 to 14 on a pair of
Sturgis gifters. Nevertheless,
Forde replied in kind, put in
a tip in basket and added two
more free points. A Benner
driver gave the Tornadoes 22
to 15 command.
Medford held four leads of
eight points and was ahead
by six, 32 to 26, at halftime.
The Tornado outscorcd
Lebanon 12 to 4 in the first
3 minutes of the second
quarter and had a 22 to IS
margin for the full period.
Third quarter favored the
Warriors 21 to 15.
Field goaling and averag
ing was close. Medford had
27 of 66 for .409 and Lebanon
26 of 64 for .406.
Ninth in Row
Triumph was the ninth in
a row for Medford which
stormed into the tournament
by sweeping the last half of
its conference.
Both clubs worked the ball
well at times. Lebanon had
a bit the better of it on fast
breaking. The Warriors were
able to get their defense set
consistently against the Med
fords. Work of Forde, Hill
and Benner on the boards
kept the Warrior fast break
from being more damaging.
Lebanon, after taking 61
to 59 lead, tried to play keep
away. Yet, the ball switched
hands several times before
Forde's tying free shots.
Ron Davies' rebound bas
ket with five seconds left was
the winning goal as tall
North Eugene outscored Mar
shall eight to six in overtime
in the second fracas last
