Four Themes Key
Spring Sportswear
Sportswear for spring and ; slacks and walkshorts are lit-
summer 1963 is keyed to four
themes that should find high
favor with most men.
The "Nautical Look" is due
for its second big season in a
row. It will be accompanied
by a growing "Western Influ
ence" (Ranchwear), by styles
linked to "Active Sportswear"
and a new, dressier group of
Weekendwear. '
The Nautical Look encom
passes hooded parkas and
pullovers made of slicker
cloths, duck, chambray and
new laminated fabrics. Bell
bottom trousers, direct from
the French riviera, have made
their move from naval vessels
to outboard cruisers. These, of
course, are in white duck.
Look for crew-neck and
boat-neck knit shirts In bright
signal - flag colors, cut-and-sewn
shirts, cabana sets and
swim trunks-all in the saltier
style expressions.
Ranchwear - the Western
influence-plays up denim and
chambray, those old standbys
of the cowpokes. They also
borrow the pointed pocket
flaps, yoked shirts, contrast
ing color stitching and rivets
that stem from frontier shirts
and western "jeans." Calico
prints and big gingham checks
are other distinctive features
of the Western Influence
Active Sportswear for golf,
tennis, fishing and other
sports- has contributed tea
tures In both style and con
struction to many. other leis
ure garments.
Weekendwear, the last but
not least of the new trends,
lends itself very smartly to
the newly emphasized coordi
nates.
Here, both sport jackets and
erally made for one another.
Coordinated patterns with
solid colors, fabric-with-fabric
themes, and both blends and
contrasts in color and shad
ings make these dressier cas
uals very easy on the eye.
Keyed to the mild days of
the vernal season, the new
spring toppers are made of
suiting weight ' fabrics.
For instance, there are trim
but tough sharkskins, sophis
ticated nailheads, houndstooth
checks and sporty glen plaids
woven of fine worsted yarns.
Then, of course, there ara
the soft, luxurious cashmeres,
cashmere blends and camel
hairs. The natural tan camel
tones, incidentally, are mak
ing a strong comeback. These,
too, are in the light-color
trend, as well as in then ew
lightweight swing. .
Fabric Is High
On Fashion List
Fabric is fashion, more im
portantly than ever, in this
season of simple silhouettes
and pretty femininity.
The airy effervescence of
open weaves and surface text
ures spreads its Influence
everywhere. Mohairs and mo-
linrl blends, lacy wools and
feathery fabrics of all sorts
loom up importantly.
In counterpoint is a crisp-
er look, of which linens and
linen effects are the leading
spring exponent. Silk shares
this interest, not only in
linen types but in a variety
of rustic weaves.
Ottomans and other rib
bed-surface fabrics have the
crisp touch of fashion, as do
many firm-finished woolens
and blends.
Spreading from sportswear
Into dressier areas are work
denims and denim copies.
Knits - cottons, wools,
miracles, blends - continue as
perhaps the single most sub
stantial influence In current
fashion, given an impetus by
-or giving an Impetus to-the
easy, effortless styles that are
classic and newsworthy.
SPRING CLASSICS
Snrinir enver-uns in sweat
crs are fabulously exciting. In
addition to traditional types
in classic pullovers and car
Hloan- thpre are tunic types
ponchos, brief boleros and
long, almost coat-like stylings.
There s a trend to wrap
arounds especially (n Call
fnmia . stvled sportswear:
back-wrap skirts and casual
dresses.

In smooth and grained, anti

Envelopes, scheduled for
spring popularity, are gently

They're set off with rigid bar
handles, gold bracelets and
filigreed detail. Brilliant pat
ents are seen as frequently as

bag category. ,
Most of the new shoulder
bags have adjustable self
leather straps to give added
versatility. Outside flap clos
ings, gold buckles and bright
colors add color to costumes.
Casual bags are refined in
appearance. Convenient and
handsome, totes, satchels and
pouches In shape retaining
leathers expand to hold small
parcels without changing their
modest exterior proportions.
Evening bag shapes are gen
erally pared down. To catch
the eye are brilliant suedes.
