Silly Things That Peopla
Worry About
I marvel al the things that
many people worry about -things
that it would never oc
cur to me to
be afraid of.
Some day, I
would like to

every . week
Here is a let
ter from a woman who says
that one day her cat brushed
up against the baby's face, as
many an affectionate cat will
do. Later, the "vet , found
that the cat had a cancer, and
now the mother ' in a con
stant slate of worr,", fearing
that the baby will catch the
cat s cancer. I sympathize,
but actually, I would never
worry about such a possibil
ity, because cancer is ' not
"catching."
Occasionally, I get an anx
ious letter from a woman who
is afraid she will catch cancer
even from the woman in the
next apartment or the next
hou.e. Such a fear is silly -there
is no need for it.
Dozens of women still
write, much frightened be
cause someone has assured
them that cooking in alumi
num pots will cause cancer. I
have been hearing this for
perhaps 50 years ; although
government health authorities
have for years fought this
fear, it still survives. It is so
silly. Anyone who doubts this
should step into a drug store
and ark the man to show him
some of the medicines that are
new being prescribed to help
people with stomach ulcers.
What are they made of? Most
of them arc made of a pow
ered prcpcralion of alumni-
num. Men with an ulcer swal
low this aluminum by the
pound, and no harm comes to
them because of It.
Rust Not Harmful
Many people are frantic
when a child scratches his
skin on a rusty nail. When
I was a small child, my moth

Isn't because iron rust will
not hurt anyone. It Is only a
deep wound, made by any
kind of nail - even a rhiny
new one - which is danger
ous. Only in deep wounds can
the germ of lock - jaw (teta
nus) grow - because this
germ can gro only where
there Is no oxygen (in the air),
and there Is no air in the bot
tom of a narrow, deep
wound. Hence it is that a per
son who has a deep wound
of any kind should have an in-

jeetion such as will guard
him against getting lock-jaw.
Commonly, we doctors give
an anti-tetanus injection to a
child who has suffered a
shallow scratch, but 1 think
this is Illogical.
A woman writes today,
much frightened because her
parakeet scratched her with
his beak. She worries because
she read that birds cause his
toplasmosis (a disease of the
lungs sometimes like tubercu
losis). If 1 were she, I would
not worry about the scratch
The histoplasma grows and
multiplies in the dung of cer
tain birds. It is only when a
person breathes in much dust
perhaps containing dung -
that he need be concerned
about histoplasmosis.
A woman writes that she
and other mothers in her
block are forbidding their
children to go near three
youngsters whose grandfather
was recently found to be suf
fering from tuberculosis.
When the health authorities
promptly came and tested the
children with the tuberculin
and X-rayed their chests, they
found no sign of the disease.
They put the grandfather In
a sanatorium. Under these
circumstances there Is no
sense In ostracizing the inno
cent and perfectly harmless
children.
Should Quli Worrying
f have here a letter from
a woman who has become so
fearful from all she has read
about the supposed dangers
of radiation that the other
day she refused to let her
dentist X-ray a few of her
teeth. Actually, she should
quit worrying. Every year
now since 1926, I have been
X-rayed, and so far as I can
sec, I am none the worse for
it. I am strong and well. The
dosage of X-rays given while
making examinations is so
small it docs not hurt anyone.
Here is an interesting
worry: a woman's aunt has
bequeathed her a lovely fur
coat which, naturally, she
would love to wear. But the
aunt died of cancer, so my
correspondent is afraid even
to touch the coat. She should
go ahead and wear it happily,
because there isn't a chance
that she can get the aunt's
cancer.
Here's a letter from a wom
an who has spent years worry
ing herself sick since some
one told' her that the beauti
cian who one day shampooed
her sister's hair once had
syphilis. Ever since then, my
correspondent has been ter
ribly distressed, fearing that
her sister got trie disease and
then passed it on to her. Ac
tually, she has absolutely no
reason for her terrible fear.
because syphilis is not spread
in that way. It is never given
to anyone by a touch of the
hand.
Many people would worry
less If they understood cancer
better. To help them Dr. Alva
rez has prepared a booklet
called, "What We Know
About Cancer." You may get
a copy of It by sending 25
cents and a self-addressed,
stamped envelope with your
request for It to Dr. Walter
