Four East Germans
Escape to Freedom
Berlin-OIPD-Four East Ber
lin workers wriggled through
a 20-by-20 inch hole In the
Communist wall to escape to
West Berlin, It was learned
today.
The four, members of a
work crew assigned to the
border, broke through an Iron
door and two walls in 11
hours to make good their
flight Monday.
They escaped on the border
of the French sector where
the wall on a railway freight
station forms part of the anti
refugee barrier.
They told Western officials
they were doing construction
work in the north freight
yard and decided to take the
chance to flee.
The men, aged 16 to 40,
took turns in escaping
through the wall so their
absence from the work crew
would not be noticed immediately.
They wriggled through to
Garden Strasse, a West Ber
lin street running alongside
the station.
