a school or a home or a state
or federal agency, or a clinic
that will help them to take

I have before me the Fourth
Edition of Porter Sargent's
Directory for Exceptional
Children - Educational and
Training Facilities. (Porter
Sargent's address is 11 Beacon

Alvarez
st., Boston, Mass.). In his
book, he lists 3,000 facilities
for the care of the unusual
child. He lists also 764 psy
chiatric and guidance clinics.
The price of the book is $6.
Doubtless it can be found in
many public libraries.
Sargent says that four mil
lion children in the United
States need special forms of
education and treatment. His
press has put out some other
publications, such as the
Handbook of Private Schools,
A Guide to Summer Camps
and Summer Schools, and sev
eral others. I have always ad
mired Sargent for the wonder
ful work he docs in listing
these facilities, which many
people so much want to find
and use.
Many people do not realize
how valuable a crippled per
son or a blind person can be
in our civilization if he is well
cared for and well educated.
One of the most valuable cit
izens we in America ever had
was a man named Steinmetz,
who from birth was a twisted
little hunchback. With his
genius and his tremendous
mathematical ability, he rede-
signed our motors and dyna
mos, so as to make them much
smaller and much more effici
ent. There must be many
more Stcinmetzes in this
country who could do great
things if they only could be
helped - first to get strong,
and then to get a good educa
tion.
We in America cannot af
ford to waste such genius.
Just think of that great Amer
ican, Jacqueline Cochran, who
has done so much for aviation
She tells in her autobiography
of her childhood when - an
orphan - she was put to work
in a cotton mill. No one made
any effort to help that bril
liant mind, and so he had to
learn to read and write all
by herself.
Today we must be on the
lookout for these brilliant
people, and must see to it that
they can have the education
they want to have.

to be an afternoon wedding
in church, and she'll wear a
white gown and veil. We're
trying to keep things simple,
small-scale, and "homey." The
bridal couple have agreed to
this, and are limiting them
selves to a matron of honor
and one, or maybe two attend
ants for the entire "bridal
party."
Now comes Fern, the bride
groom's sister, asking that her
6-year-old daughter be the
flower girl, and her 3-year-old
son, the ring-bearer. I thought
that sort of nonsense had been
discontinued. If children are
to be included, then the logi
cal ring-bearer would be my
11-year-old son who is closer,
Street Sweeper,
Car in Accident
A street sweeper owned by
the city of Medford colided
with a car about 7:20 o'clock
this morning at East Main st.
and Kecne Way, according to
city police. No injuries were
reported.
Operator of the street
sweeper was Gay Maurice An
derson Jr., 49, of 95 Clover
lane, and driver of the auto
mobile was Dr. A. Erin Mer-
kel, 60, of 2933 Fairview
place. No citations were is
sued.
In the only accident in the
city Thursday, Harry William
Ward, 55, of 2104 Kings
highway, was cited for fail
ure to yield the right of way
after his car collided with a
vehicle operated by Harold
Edward Baker, 31, of 411
West 12th St., about 4:40 p.m.
at Grape and Main sts. No in
juries were reported, officers
said.
Americans Claimed
Illegally in Cuba

But Fern should let us keep
to the original plans.
Fern P. Since Mrs K. is
running everything, including
her daughter I might add,
you would think she'd want
the wedding to be as pretty
and picturesque as possible. I
happen to have a daughter
who's a real cutie-pie, win
ning and well-behaved and
beautiful. And my small son,
with his flaming red hair and
freckles, makes a big hit with
everybody. Why shouldn't she
invite them to be part of the
procession? Especially since
the only other attendant, so
far, is the bride's cousin.
Where does our family come
in?
Her daughter is marrying
my only brother and, since
he's just wild about his niece
and nephew, they should be
right up there with him. Her
son wouldn't fit in at all.

The Council: When is an
in-law an outlaw? When she
acts like Fern, fussing over
what is really a petty matter.
After years of attending wed
dings, arranging them (for
daughters, nieces and friends),
we've yet to find one where
someone isn t peeved over
something. It can be the seat
ing arrangement, the shortage
of liquor, the omission of a
relative from the guest list,
the inclusion of a non-relative
in same. Here the to-do is
about the spotlight, the hon
ors, the recipients of the oohs
and ahs.
This case makes the im
portant point that when in
laws are determined to get
along, any possible points of
friction are quickly leveled
off. But when there's underly
ing discontent, envy, disap
proval well then, the small
est matter provides the "air
hole" for lotting off steam.
Fern can put this in her pipe
(a peace-pipe, we hope) and
smoke it.
As to the merits of the de
bate, we leaned over to peek
at what our neighboring col
umnists, the etiquette ladies,
have to say about attendants.
Their first plea is to. avoid
turning the march down the
aisle into a theatrical proces
sion. It's even O.K. to have
no attendants. A boy of 11 is
over-age as a ring-bearer, but
he's within the age bracket
for junior attendant, which is
from 7 to 15. Fern's daughter
is the right age for a flower-
gril, and almost right for a
junior bridesmaid, again 7 to
15 by definition.
While the 3-year-old could
possibly slip Into the show as
ring-bearer or page, we rec
ommend keeping him in back
of the church with a lollipop.
He certainly can't understand
much about what's going on
and will be bored, as well as
distracting up front.
To help Mrs. K. decide (and
the final choice should be hers
and her daughter's) we quote
Amy Vanderbilt: "It's best to
keep the wedding party at the
same age level as that of the
bride and bridegroom." The
two older children, one from
each family, can attend the
couple. But the celebrants
may prefer to enlist their con
temporaries for this honor.

Ten Persons Appear In Circuit Court
Ten men appeared in Jack
son county circuit court
Thursday afternoon for ar
raignment, appointment of at
torney, or sentencing.
Arraigned on grand jury
indictments were Raymond
Ernest Maddox, 33, of Phoe
nix, whose case was contin
ued for entering a plea to a
charge of receiving and con
cealing stolen property;
Gareth George Flansburg, 24,
of route 2, box 24B, Jackson
ville, who pleaded guilty to
a charge of receiving and con
cealing stolen property, and
James Earl Junior Justice, 26,
of Colton, Calif., whose case
was continued for plea to a
charge of uttering and pub
lishing a false check.
All three had bail set at
$1,500,
Judge James M. Main or
dered a presentence report on
Flansburg when it was learn
ed he had a previous record
in Idaho and Josephine coun
ty. He is charged with con
cealing a wooden coffee table.
Maddox is charged with con
cealing an electric oven and
range unit.
Placed on Probation
Ellis LeRoy Cornutt, IB, of
a hotel in Medford, also
charged with receiving and
concealing stolen property,
was sentenced to 3'i years
in the Oregon Correctional in
stitution, and Judge Main sus
pended execution of sentence
so he was placed on probation
for that period.
Imposition of sentence was
suspended with the men
placed on probation and resti
tution was ordered for John
Arthur Harper, 18, of 198V4
Harrison st., Ashland, who
was charged with grand
larceny, five years, and Don
ald Clair Nutt, 30, of Haw
thorne, Calif., who was
charged with obtaining prop
erty by false pretenses, two
years.
Pleading guilty to charges
of obtaining property by false
pretenses was Chester Taylor,
26, of Hazelhurst, Ga. Bail
was set at $1,500 and a pre-
sentencing report was order
ed. Also pleading guilty was
Warren James Davis, 35, of

charged with contributing to
the delinquency of a minor.
A presentence report was or
dered. Judge Main asked for a sup
plementary presentencing re
port on Clifford Ray Wil
loughby, 22, of 1918 Maple
Park dr., Medford, who pre
viously had pleaded guilty to
burglary not in a dwelling.
His case was continued.
Ronald L. Ricketts was ap
pointed attorney for Wayne
Lockwood, 22, Rodeo, Calif.,
who is charged with uttering
and publishing a false check.
TAX COLLECTIONS UP
Salem -IUPII-Tax collections
on Feb. 28 were up 8.4 per
cent over the first eight
months of the previous fiscal
year, according to the Stalo
Tax Commission. Collections
through Feb. 28 totaled $71.8
milion.
