Clay Fights Jones
In Garden Tonight
By JACK CUDDY
New York-flJPD-Cocky Cas
sius Clay will try tonight to
put his fast fists where his
loud mouth is, for a fourth
round knockout over danger
ous Doug Jones in jammed
Madison Square Garden.
The Garden s first sellout
crowd in 13 years 18,732
spectators occupying all scats
and standing room will
watch unbeaten young Clay s
attempt to fulfill his daring
fourth-round prediction. The
gate will approximate
$105,000. . '
Twenty-one-year-old Cassi
us of Louisville, Ky., the
world's second ranking heavy
weight, has loudly but suc
cessfully pin-pointed in ad
vance the exact rounds for 12
of his previous 14 knockouts.
And if the "Louisville Lip"
can overcome the double Jo
nah of shooting for his 13th
round- predicted kayo on
March 13, he'll certainly be in
line for a September shot at
the heavyweight crown.
Jones Never Kayoed
A fourth-round knockout
victory for Clay would be
notable achievement indeed
because his opponent. New
Yorker Jones, never has been
kayoed in 25 fights against
generally better opposition
than. Clay faced while Clay
clicked off his 17 straight vie
tories as a professional.
"I can't miss," said Cassius
modestly today. And Cassius,
the Olympic light heavy'
weight champion of 1960,
added: "I'm the greatest."
The Kentucky contender
who garnishes his pugilism
with poetry, then slated:
"Jones thinks he'll fight
some more
"But ' he's got to go in
four."
The belting bard from the
bluegrass country is buoyant
ly riding a string of nine
straight knockouts. And he is
favored at 17-5 to beat 26-year-old
Jones, who produced
the biggest upset of 1962 on
last Dec. 15 when he knocked
out third-ranked Zora Folley
in the seventh round at the
Garden. Folley had been a
12-5 favorite.
Lost Three Decisions
That was Jones' 21st vie
tory and 13th knockout in his
25 fights, which included one
draw. Doug lost three bouts
on decisions to Eddie Ma-
chen, light heavy weight
champion Harold Johnson in
a title fight, and Folley in
their first bout at Denver,
Colo., Aug. 1, 1962, He also
had a draw with Erich Scho-
eppner of Germany.
Despite Jones greater ex
perience against good men
Cassius is a long favorite be
cause he is the taller, heavier
and longer in the reach.
Tonight's scheduled 10
rounder will not be televised
nor broadcast to homes. It
will be sent by closed circuit
television to 37 arenas in 33
cities with a total of 150,000
available seats and a possible
$500,000 total gate. It also
will be sent to home pay-TV
stations in Toronto and Hart
ford, Conn.

UPI Sports Editor
Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-UOT-
Manager Ralph Houk flatly
predicts the New York Yan
kees will win the American
league pennant again.
"If I didn't feel that way,
I should be fired," he claims.
I don't think for a minute
that winning is going to be
easy, but I don't see any club
capable of beating us out."
This is Houk s third year
at the helm of the Yankees
and his record is perfect -two
pennants and two World
Series triumphs. And each
spring he has come right out
and picked his club to win.
I have more reason to be
optimistic this spring than
last," he said. "Then we had
two jobs on the club open -left
field and shortstop. Now
have only one job open.
first base, and we are confi
dent we have the player !o
fill the bill in Joe Pepitone.
We also will have Tony
Kubek with us from the start
and don't forget we have an
other starting pitcher in Stan
Williams."
with Tresh, Mickey Mantle
and Roger Maris; behind the
plate with Elston . Howard,
Johnny Blanchard and Yogi
Berra and in the infield wilh
Pepitone, Kubek, Bob Rich
ardson and Clctc Boyer. On
the bench will be Hector Lo
pez, Dale Long, Jack Reed
and Phil Linz.
Houk refused to pick any
one club as the most serious
threat to the Yankees.
"The Tigers, the Twins,
the White Sox. the Orioles,
the Angels and the Indians
could all be in the race," he
reasoned. "And the Red Sox
appear stronger, too. If any
of those clubs can come up
with an outstanding rookie
it could change the look of
things, but right now I don't
see any one of them beating
us out."

Line of Seattle won the right

Northwest in next week's
AAU basketball tournament
in Denver with a 109-90 vic
tory over Priestly Oil of Port
land Tuesday night.
Bill Hanson with 23 and
Dave Mahlman with 21 points
led the winners, while Jack
Parker hit 22 and Tex White
man 20 each for the Portland
team.
Federal Old Line led 57-39
at the half.
Trad Bill Skowron
Kubek was in the service
for part of last season and
rookie Tom Tresh took his
job. Then when Kubek Rot
out of service Tresh was
shifted to left field, where
he became a fixture. To get
Williams, the Yanks gave up
Bill Skowron, their right
handed power hitting first
baseman.
Houk reiterated that the
Yankees would not have part
ed with Skowron unless they
were sure Pepitone could
take over at first.
Joe will do a better job
in the field and I also think
he will do the job at the
plate," Houk added. "Of
course, we will miss Skowron,
but we figured we could give
him up to get the starting
pitcher we needed."
He said he wasn t expecting
any miracles from Williams.
"All we are counting on
him for is 14 victories, the
same number he scored with
the Dodgers last season. Any
thing over that would be
gravy and, of course, wel
come. It would be nice if
he could win 20, but we are
not expecting him to do it.
Williams will be a starter
along with Whitey Ford,
Ralph Terry and Bill Staf
ford. To round out the staff
Houk has relievers Marshall
Bridges, Luis Arroyo, Bill
Kunkel and Roland Sheldon
with Bud Daley and Jim
Coates his middle inning re
lievers and spot starters.
