Mrs. Neil Davidson, Lenora
drive, Medford, brought a
large number of French dolls
to the Manor club room Sun
day last week, for our enjoy
ment and information. Mrs.
Davidson has a collection of
more than 400 dolls, which
she plans to exhibit in classi
fied sections from time to
time; and, eventually, j liii.n
a complete exhibit of all of
them for the benefit of some
favorite charity.
This doll collecting hobby is
a revelation to me. I knew
that a number of people col
lect a few dolls for personal
pleasure; but I now learn that
"serious collecting" has joined
the widespread coin and
stamp fad. Consequently, this
enthusiasm, plus the scarcity
of authentic examples of dolls
made in many lands down
through the generations has
pushed the prices charged and
received for them up into the
stratosphere.
Collectors' dolls, of course,
are not for children. For cen
turies they have been used
to model gowns, millinery and
accessories and were then
taken from one European
court to another. The French
dolls we Manor members saw
here were dressed in complete
and luxurious outfits hand
made, including true-to-life
Follies Bergcre costumes;
with d r es s e s , hats, coats,
shoes, dainty undies, even per
fectly made miniature cor
sets (or was it "stays"?), with
tiny white kid gloves, fans
and beaded purses. They all
had beautiful, real hair, were
all appropriately named, and
some nao. tnc most pro
nounccd and intriguing per
sonaiities. I shall be antici.
pating a visit to other displays
of her character, modern, and
oriental dolls in the future.
A number of men joined
other fascinated members in
viewing a miniature early
American kitchen (liower j.a.
dens outside the windows
yet), lighted and absolutely
perfect in every detail. This
was the only miniature house
or furniture that Mrs. David
son has collected so far.
