This Week's Plan for Home Builders
By HIAWATHA ESTES
In less than 1,400 square
feet, this interesting home per
mits a large family-and a pos
sible guest, if you please-to
extract an amazing amount of
livability and sheer comfort.
What's more, the compactness
pf the plan leaves a generous
area for outdoor living on
even a minimum size lot.
' When shopping for a new
home, there are many reasons
vhy we may have to settle for
les in the way of space. How
ever, we decidedly do not
have to settle for less with
reference to good planning
and convenience. When we
talk about "budget" houses,
we don't mean bare minimum
houses.
From the recessed entry,
one has direct access to the
living room. This room has
been planned to facilitate
furniture arrangement. Most
of the wide fireplace extends
outside the house leaving a
maximum of living space in
side. To visually extend the
boundaries of this room, par
tial walls with posts above
separate the room from part
of the hall and family room.
Wide picture windows face
the street.
Shoulder High Window
A shoulder high window in
the family room provides
cross ventilation but does not
interfere with furniture ar
rangement. An eating bar has
been included as part of the
cabinets separating the family
room and kitchen. Summer
living was never so nice as it
will be with this plan where
sliding glass doors open to the
patio. The patio is so close to
the kitchen that it can easily
double as an outside dining
room as weather permits.
You will find your family
and friends gathering in your
kitchen when you give a party
because the kitchen is the cen
ter of a wonderful multi-purpose
room overlooking the
rear garden. Notice the wide
floor to ceiling pantry.
Traffic flows exceptionally
from both the front and rear
entrances in all directions
without annoying detours
through one room to another.
Three-Quarter Bath
A three-quarter bath is di
rectly accessible from two of
the bedrooms while the main
bath is just off the entry
where it can be easily reached
from the rear entry, living
area or bedroom areas of the
home.
To save closet space, the
furnace has been located in
the garage.
The exterior lines of this
contemporary design are re
freshing and impressive. The
living room windows are
flanked by stone pilasters
which are tied together by a
long, low stone planter. Some
what the reverse is true at the
front of the garage where
stone planters have been
placed on each side of stone
pilasters with glass above.
