Regional Roundup
by Cleve Twltchell
Mail Tribune Regional Editor
Spring had just about come to Prospect before the
weather turned colder and brought snow over the week
end. Velda Barr, our Prospect correspondent, reported
last week that the robins and meadowlarks were singing,
and that the swallows had returned Feb. 20. "Buttercups
have been blooming the last two weeks. Crocuses and
violets are blooming also. So it won't be long before
people will be making their gardens. And 1 suppose
when they get all nicely started we will have a nice
big snow storm, and there go the gardens!" she added.
Genevieve Briggs, reporting from the Wilderville
Wonder area, said, "I notice the pussywillow is having
kittens and the yellow jasmine is in bloom, also the
heavenly purplewood violets. I notice there are extremely
heavy buds on my lilacs, sr.d the old legend says that
when the buds are heavy on lilacs the corn will have
big ears." Mrs. Briggs added, however, that the fruit
trees also have big buds on them there, which she fell
was not good for this time of year, when a heavy frost
or snow can still come. "After 18 years of living in Ore
gon, this is the earliest I have noticed the flowering
quince to bloom," she concludes.
An idea of how small this winter's snow pack in
northern California was before last week end's snow
can be grasped from the following figures supplied by
the Klamath National forest office in Yreka: At Upper
Middle Boulder (elevation 6.B00 feet) there was 5.0
inches of snow on Feb. 26. Normal for this time of year
is 65.3 inches. At lower Middle Boulder (elevation 6,200
feet), where normal for Feb. 26 is 39.9 inches, there's
no snow at all this year. The same was true at Dynamite
Meadows (elevation 5,700 feet), where the normal for
Feb. 26 is 56.2 inches.
Naws From Austria
Miss Brigctte Mosier of Vienna, Austria, was a stu
dent at Crater High school last year under the Ameri
can Field service program. She is now home in Aus
tria, but has kept up a correspondence with Mrs. C. W.
Anhorn, president of the Crater American Field service
chapter.
In one of her recent letters she wrote, "I would for
nothing in the world change for the past year. It was
really the greatest and impressing year, a year in which
I feel I learned more than my whole life. I don't know
how to describe it to you, how much it meant to me. It
was not only that I learned about Americans, but I
learned about myself. I also got so many ideas, new
ideas, things I never thought about. Because of that it
alw;ivs seems to me as I just woke up in America."
Proipect Noedi Firt Truck
Mrs. Barr reports from Prospect that the community
Is badly in neod of a new fire truck. The old truck has
had its day and is about beyond repair. She writes,
"Prospect doesn't have a fire district and is completely
dependent on its own resources. If people would all chip
In and help to raise the money it would be for their own
protection and welfare. If anybody has suggestions or
Ideas, please express them."

Happy Camp In response
to mounting local interest in

Lawrence Bowker, president
of Associated Teachers of the
Klamath, and John Sugdcn,
legislative committee chair
man of that organization,
drove to Sacramento recently
to attend a legislative sem
inar sponsored by the Cali

Participating in the pro

sembly minority leader; Jer

semblymen Robert Monagan
and Leo Ryan of the assembly
education committee; Senat
or Albert Rodda of the sen
ate education committee; Dr.
Arthur Corey, executive sec
retary of the CTA; and Gov
ernor Edmund G. Brown.
Governor Brown delivered
the keynote speech at a ban
quet and used the occasion to
make a strong bid for the
passage of his education bill,
a school finance measure
which includes the county
wide tax proposal.
In reflecting his own views
Bowker said that the measure
is 20 years overdue and Cali
fornians should be hopeful of
its passage. He also stated that
after listening to and talking
to many lawmakers, it was
obvious that the bill would
meet strong opposition from
districts with a high assessed
valuation who are not quite
ready to share this plum with
their tax burdened neighbors
within their respective coun
ties. Archaeology Club
