Sea Gulls
These plain-looking birds
suddenly have begun sporting flashy feathers as part of a scientific study
rHOTOGIAKM tV AITHUI SCHATZ
Beryl Simpson, to, uses a motorboat
to carry crated gulls to a dyeing station.
The standard picture of the New England Coast includes a
starched white lighthouse, a blue-black sea, somber rocks, and a '
flock of gray-and-white sea gulls.
But recently the gulls have begun to louse up the scene by appear
ing in feathers of bright green, yellow, red, and blue (see cover).
Behind this startling development is the Massachusetts Audubon
Society's new program of trapping gulls, dyeing and banding them,
then setting them free again. Since a different color is used for each
nesting area, gull spotters now can chart the birds' movements with
a good deal of accuracy.
Interest in gulls' habits results from the big birds' population ex
plosion and the problems thus created. One major one: the gulls
congregate in large numbers on airport runways and are a hazard
to jet planes.

worked on the project. Above, she frees a
bird after dyeing it. At left, she admires
a baby gull she found among the seaside rocks.
