ior for high school seniors
planning to study natural re
sources conservation In col
lege.

cluding Ihe Oregon Federa
tion, arc now seeking appli
cants for the jobs.
Young men who will be 18
by June 15, and who have
plans to enter college and
study some phase of natural
resource management arc
asked to apply, particularly if
tlicy have an above-average
scholastic ranking and are in
terested in working this sum
mer on a national park, wild
life refuge or forest.
The steps to be taken start

eral Employment application

McMinnvillc, state affiliate
coordinator of the selection

The completed form with a
transcript of high school
grades, a list of extra-curricular

'Tutors Unlimited' Set
Up by College Student

H. Mathis "burns the mid
night oil" with other students
for pay.
Mathis, 21, heads "Tutors
Unlimited." He and a large
group of young men and wo
men in his employ help ele
mentary, high school and col
lege students with homework
problems.
Mathis is a senior psycholo
gy major at Washington uni
versity. He and hia fellow
tutors are prepared to visit
a . student's home at a mo
ment's notice if necessary.
Anyone who is serious
enough at midnight or 2 a.m.
deserves help if he gets stuk
on a problem,". Mathis said.
When students telephone
Mathis late at night, he tells
them, "All right, get dressed,
I'm coming over." The ma
jority of his students range
from eighth to twelfth grad
ers. Qualified
Mathis and his tutors are
qualified to help students at
all levels, . including those
working for Ph. D. degre
"Right now, we're helping
a pre-med student," Mathis
said.
Mathis got the idea for the
tutoring business as a fresh
man, when other students
asked help in academic work.

subjects needed to help stu.
dents, Mathis did a lot of
searching around for quali
fied assistants. He gives
personal Interview to appll
cants, asking information on
educational background, qual
ifications, hobbies, interests
and personality aspects. Less
than 10 per cent qualify for
the jobs.
Mathis encourages his stu
dents to hold onto their out
side interests even if their
grades aren't up. It's Impor
tant, he explains, for students
to have outside interests and
hobbies.
Has Hobbies
In fact, Mathis started sev
eral hobbies, like stamp col
lecting and photography so
as to share "a common inter
est' with some of his students.
"It helps communication
between us," he says.
"My students aren't dumb,"
he said. "More of them are
striving to excel in their
school work than simply to
pass.
Our objective is to strive
to develop an "A' student, but
we concentrate mainly for a
well-rounded student.
Confidential
Some of Mathis' students
don't want it known that they
are being helped in school
work at home for various rea
sons, so Mathis keeps his stu
dent list confidential.
His tutoring business has
worked out so well, Mathis
says, that he contemplates
opening branches in other
cities, with the hope of even
tually opening a group of
special prep schools.
Mathis declined to say how
much he charges for his home
work help service. His mo
ther, who said she doesn't
see him much, between school
and tutoring, told UPI: "Bill
takes it up with the student
or parent. Money isn't the
big thing. His goal is to pro
duce results."
