Mansfield Says
Critics of JFK
Aware of Position
Washington - fUPD - Senate
Democratic Leader Mike
Mansfield said today Republi
can critics of President Ken
neday's Cubm policy know
that "under certain conditions
he is prepared to take certain
drastic actions."
The Montana senator did
not elaborate. He made the
statement in an Interview
when asked about reports
that Senate GOP Leader Ev
erett M. Dirksen, III., had told
Kennedy that Republicans
would continue to attack the
administration on the Cuban
issue.
Mansfield's comments fol
lowed these developments:
-Sen. Hugh Scott (R-Pa.)
called for a total quarantine
of Cuba except for food. He
said this would "get rid of
the Russians" on the island.
Support Arms Blockad
-Gonzalo J. Facio, chair
man of the Council of the Or
ganization of American
States, said he believed the
OAS would support a com
plete arms blockade of Cuba.
-Rep. Stanley R. Tupper,
(R-Mainc) one of eight U.S.
lawmakers who returned from
a week end visit to Guantana
mo, Cuba, naval base, said he
believed there were no long-
range Soviet missiles stored
in Cuban caves because no
roads had been built to the
caves.
Mansfield said the Presi
dent was "not fearful" of
GOP criticism but that "if
fault is to be found it would
be the American thing to do
to offer alternatives of a con
structive nature."
"I am sure that the Re
publicans are fully aware of
the fact that President Ken
nedy is doing everything In
his power to lessen the dan
ger from Cuba caused by the
stationing of Russian troops
and technicians there," Mans
field said.
"I am sure that they are
fully aware of the fact that
under certain conditions he
is prepared to take certain
drastic actions."
Mansfield said the Republi
cans also knew that Kennedy
had to consider difficult situa
tions in Berlin, Western Eu
rope, the Middle East, South
Asia, Southeast Asia, For
mosa, and Korea as well as
in Cuba and Latin America.
He said that regardless of
what "some of them may say
on the surface, deep down
they are fully aware that the
President's first concern-and
this would apply to any presi
dent - la the welfare and se
curity of this country."
