Not Soon Forgotten
To the Editor: Enroute to
Los Angeles recently my hus
band and I made a stop in
Medford. After a few hours I
became ill, and was taken to
the Sacred Heart hospital.
From the registration desk
to the time of being released I
was treated with more inter
est and care than I had ever
experienced. Each person that
contacted me was interested
in their care of me. When
one is ill, away from home,
this experience is not soon
forgotten. .
To the city of Medford I
say you are fortunate to have
a plant like the Sacred Heart
hospital. The concern I felt as
a patient was unbelieveable in
these busy days.
Thank you each one at Sa
cred Heart, and to you Dr.
Buonocore.

Help Save Lives
To the Editor The apparent
apathy on the part of some is
causing the eventual death of
thousands every year. If more
red-blooded Americans would
wake up and speak out their
convictions, the agonizing
deaths caused by lung cancer
could be cut down around 90
per cent.
What do I mean? Just this,
that it's time we quit being
lulled to sleep by the mislead
ing suggestions of the tobacco
interests. It seems their
avowed purpose is to make
every man, woman, boy and
girl a smoker.
No, it isn't enough to pile
every supermarket check
counter high with poisonous
fags and have the checker ask
"Anything else?" The clerk is
prohibited by state law to sell
minors cigarettes, but I ask,
what is there to keep the
youngsters from purchasing
them out of vending ma
chines? Are these machines con
stantly watched as they are
supposed to be? Absolutely
not.
A few years ago all of us
cringed to see a woman
smoke. Now even expectant
pastor's wives smoke. Sunday
sermons in some instances are
prepared in smoke filled
studies.
The other day a chartered
Christian, college stopped
briefly in town. Several of the
young "ladies" lit up. It was
a sickening sight. I do not say
this in condemnation. But how
must the Saviour of mankind
feel? We His children whom
He died to redeem, singing
praises to His name and daily
defiling their bodies? Many
take better care of their cars
than their bodies.
The writer received several
booklets from the government
health department. These
dealt with the cigarette. It
will be of interest to many,
but Uncle Sam is finally wak
ing up. This printed matter
gave statistics and warned
against smoking. But while
"Uncle" is yawning and slow
ly awakening, our citizens are
still being lulled to sleep by
lying nicotine propaganda.
Some may be critical of my
attitude. I contend we have
a murderer on the loose and
he needs to be stopped. What
are we doing about it locally?
Some are writing their rep
resentatives in Salem. I for
one am. Let's get rid of these
vending machines. Write our
representatives. They are
John Dellenbaek, Edward
Branchfield and James Red
den. Write them co State
Capitol, Salem. Spend a nickle
and help save lives.
If any want to see the out
standing lung cancer films
"1 in 20,000," or "Time Pulls
the Trigger," give me a ring.

What the Trouble Is
To the Editor: Mr. Brown,
in Communications, 2-17, says
he is not fighting the unions.
If not who are you fighting?
You mention man-hours lost
by strikes. Funny we never
hear about the man-hours lost
from unemployment. You say
man was made to struggle for
his existence. Well, what are
you griping about? It will
eventually get rougher. May
be you will be happier then.
It is our system, Mr.
Brown. We have advanced
scientifically in leaps and
bounds, socially we have stood
still, and in some instances
got in reverse.
When you mention what
happened during the war, in
fairness to everyone we
scription of men, machines,
material and money. The men
and women in America's
armed forces gave their serv
ices and thousands of them
their lives for just a few
bucks a month, while big
business got cost plus, and
plenty of plus.. Anyone that
wants a profit out of war is
not fit to be a citizen of any
country, and any government
that would allow a profit out
of war is not fit to govern any
country.
And as for Mr. Shafer,
what is wrong with a liberal?
I would rather be a liberal
any time than a Scrooge, and
even he came around after a
period of time. You have got
your wires crossed some
where.
I am not worrying about
the Commies at all. What I
have often wondered is, why
did we break off diplomatic
relations with Cuba? If Com
munism is as bad as it is pic
tured, why did we not let
Cuba alone and run free ex
cursions for us poor white
trash and show us Just how
bad it really is.
The money changers are
ones that are afraid of Com
munism. Our government is not in
terested in the welfare of the
masses In any country. If
they were, why are they not
interested in the welfare of
their own people? President
Kennedy told us himself that
millions go to bed hungry in
this good old U.S.A. every
night. Why? We have an
baundance.
The big boys don't like
Technocracy any better than
they do Communism, but
they can't do anything about
it, so they give it the silent
treatment. If it was given as
much publicity as Commu
nism we would have it in a
short time. No, Communism
is not our trouble. Our
trouble is capitalism.

in Acts 2:38 and In other
scriptures by other inspired
apostles, most certainly are
subject to conditions. These
are given very plainly by
Peter. Mr. Jenny obviously
knows of these conditions,
but apparently feels they are
not necessary for his brother
hood. The conditions of re
ceiving the promises and re
wards of which Christ taught
do not in the slighest consti
tute a denial of his personal
teachings.
In regard the Constitution,
which Mr. Jenny feels cannot
be limited without being de
nied, even our founding fa
thers would not accept the
document until they had
added the Bill of Rights, the
first 10 amendments, or limi
tations if you please.
I agree that Brotherhood,
Liberty and Justice are in
divisible, but they have be
come and remain "facts" only
so long as the people will de
vote the same type of effort
which the founding fathers
found necessary to obtain
them, to now maintain them.
It has been aptly stated,
The Price of Liberty is Eter
nal Vigilence."
Our discussion should not
concern which of us is a radi
cal or a crackpot or in need
of psychiatric care. It should
be devoted to the question of
whether we should apply
your visionary, non-practical,
views to the solution of our
spiritual, personal and nation
al life, or if, seeing and heed
ing the obvious errors of the
past 30 years, we will return
to the principles of conduct
and action that produced our
great nation. It is high time
that we begin to think for
ourselves again and insist
that our leaders turn from
this welfare state idea back
to a sane and realistic man
agement of the countries af
fairs. Here then lies our dis
agreement. Why not a return
to individual responsibility.
Mr. Jenny? Why continue to
put up with wild financial
policies, civilian interference
in military affairs?
In regard to your public
prayer in my behalf, please
refer to Matthew 6:2 and
henceforth let Matthew 6:6 be
your guide in such matters.

Sailors
Amid the surge and crash of world events,
Helpless as children to control or guide,
We're trapped like sailors where the elements
Leap in white floods, and burst the vessel's side.
And In our personal lives, although the helm
Seem in our hands, we're buffeted like the blind,
Thinking to choose, when storms that overwhelm
Drive our frail craft to ports no man designed.

Preserve Pussy
To the Editor: The Dellen-
back attempt at cat control
promises a civilized cruelty as
absurd and as unchristian in
its offense against a kindly
people as is the annual drive
against the cats and kittens
here at our Domiciliary.
We have always had an af-
fectionate regard for cats of
all classes and in all our years
never noted one single stray
that needed euthanasia. Our
cats always brought in their
house mice, rats and gophers
on our Wisconsin farm; in our
Nevada mining town they
caught their own chipmunks
and marmots. Here In Oregon
we have watched V.A. felines
bring in the fattest field and
meadow mice 4magineable.
Table scraps are merely des
sert, except for the Siamese
and they - well, they're not
American! Our cats are in
deed a part of Nature's vast
deterency.
The good old soldiers, sail
ors and Marines who reside
in this comfortable Old Sol
diers Home are humbled,
have their feeling hurt and
quietly sorrow each summer
when the guards set out their
traps for our few cats and kit
tens who would rejoice their
declining day. They love their
little persecuted pets who -with
the VAVS - are their
only neighbors. There's never
open revolt. Only a dumb
anguish too often shared by
the trapped kittens en route
somewhere - perhaps to a
mercy killing such as Dr. Del
lenback asks.
Should an entire state suf
fer the simple sorrow of these
old soldiers' summers it could
so corrupt our culture that a
scientific tomorrow would
find euthanasia provided
alike for the little wolf and
orphan as well as for the non-
pedigreed kitten. So. heed
our little psalm:
"Oh Guards! Take your
traps away
And kindly leave our kit
tens play!"

Dollars and Respect
To the Editor: Returning of
an evening from money sav
ing in shopping at Central
Point (that is a grim must for
we old-ones unable to share
in the high wages so enjoy
able to those receiving same),
we noticed an extraordinarily
long array of well filled gunny-sacks
bordering the county
paved-way. It was hard to be
lieve that so much trash could
be gathered up for disposal.
It had been the practice to
take members of the county
road-crew from permanant
road work, sometimes from
downright new construction,
base-rock to finish black-top,
to nail-in-a-stick pickup of the
most noticeable litter-bug
trash. It was not only an ex
pensive chore but one despis
ed by those detailed to do it,
the cleaning up of eye catch
ing candy and cigarette con
tainers, paper bottles tossed
out the car window by chronic
and heedless scoff-law litter
bugs. But these bulging gunny
sac k s obviously contained
rusty beer cans and bottles
dug out of the border grass.
The big "why" bothered so
that a phone call was put in
to the sheriff's office. Yep, the
answer came, men are detail
ed from the county road
crews to do said roadside
cleanup. Now this did not fit
in with what we had heard,
and seems like read, that men
on welfare had volunteered
to do some such work in ap
preciation of tax-dollars given
to tide over rough spots in
their economy. A phone call
was put in to the public wel
fare, confirming this. Another
call to the sheriff's office and
a different voice confirmed it.
How about the use of county
jail misdemeanor prisoners
like those employed on the
county farm, was asked, for
the old unreliable grapevine
had carried such news. Not
any county prisoners known
of. the voice answered.
Subsequent calls, one to the
county jail office, that county
jail inmates who were not too
resentful -minded and whose
records stood up for inspec
tion, were allowed to go on
the so-needful rehabilitation
cleanup detail, even if it it
did entail some of the unfor
tunates to clean up the very
rubbish they carelessly tossed
from the car-window when
making such ill use of their
constitutionally g u a ranteed
freedom.
More phone calls disclosed
that some 27 truck-loads of
such trash this fall have been
gathered for disposal by these
misdemeanor trusties. Also,
they've been to the green hills
of Oregon to salvage 1000 en
during yew fence posts, stack
ed at the new county barn
grounds for a maximum of
20 cents each, the retail price
being 80 cents. Some saving,
it seems, in county tax-dollars
nd men's self-respect.

What Truth It
To the Editor: I should like
to write a few lines on what
I believe Truth to be. Truth is
a living, creating force of re
generation, the essence of the
Living God and that which
His hands have wrought. Man
cannot manufacture Truth, al
though he has always tried to
do so. Man also confused Truth
with the telling of facts and
actualities or what actually
happened.
Truth is a threefold revo
lutionary process in the natur
al as well as spiritual life. Ex
cept a corn of wheat fall into
the ground and die, it abideth
alone: but if it die it bringeth
forth much fruit. The three
fold process the seed, the
stalk, the fruit, this is the
process of ALL creative life.
Out of the eventually dead
placenta comes the new born
babe and so on with the min
eral aspect. In other words
Truth and Life flow out of
death. When the threefold
process of life is applied to
the spirit, it produces an ev
erlasting Life. God is not a
respector of persons in His
perfected plan for spiritual
regeneration, He respects only
the seed of Truth that He
plants. Our bodies are like
the shell of the egg, He has
need of it. then it falls away
uoci s natural creation was
made in the Image of His own
spirit, the threefold revolu
tionary Spirit Body that is
constantly renewing the flow
of Life. Jesus Christ the Fath
er, the Way, the Truth, the
Life.
The JES In the name Jesus
means Jehovah Everlasting
Saviour, the US is us, God's
Living Lord of Truth with us.
We cannot preach another
Jehovah for there is no other
Saviour. God does not change,
He only made perfect His
spiritual way on earth. He
knew as long as the natural
had recognition His way could
not be perfect on earth. We
can now participate only by
faith and like the perfect law
of Life demands, we can be
nourished only through death.

Which Treaty?
To the Editor: One front
page news article after anoth
er about the "test ban treaty"
negotiations at Geneva, but
not one word on the "treaty
on general and complete dis
armament." Why? It should
be news when America of
fers to surrender her sov
ereignty and lay down her
military strength before the
very enemy who has promised
to bury us.
When Sen. Richard Russell,
chairman of the Senate Armed
Services Committee, first be
came aware of this offer, he is
reported to have said, "I shall
oppose with all my strength
any proposal which would dis
band the Armed Forces of the
United States. It would put
this country at the mercy of
the Soviet Union. We can talk
all we please about various
agreements, but the element
which is maintaining peace
and preventing a major war
today is the armed might of
the U.S.A., led by the Strate
gic Air Command."
Sen. Strom Thurmond is re
ported to have added, "I could
not agree with Senator Rus
sell more, In his eloquent ar
gument against disbanding
our nuclear and conventional
forces in order to create a
super armed force for the
UN."
This bitter indictment of
the Geneva Treaty Outline On
Disarmament, to say nothing
of even its existence, never
reached the American people
as a whole. The contents of
this treaty would shock the
average American to the
depths of his soul. For, in the
name of peace, we would be
asked to: Abolish West Point,
Annapolis, and all other mili
tary institutions!! Destroy the
Strategic Air Command! Dis
pose of the Navy, the Army,
the Marines, and the Coast
Guard! Permit garrisoning of
