MHS Musical Gets
Good Applause in
Opening Production
A typical audience in Med-
ford always greets any musi
cal or dramatic performance
of students with warmth and
enthusiasm, whether the pro
gram really rates it or not.
However, this reviewer can
not remember any student
performance of recent years
which was met with such en
thusiastic applause as "Bye,
Bye Birdie" received last
night in its initial perform
ance. We're known for our
coolness to musicals of any
sort by any cast, and yet we
laughed heartily last night,
and applauded along with the
rest of the parents and
friends.
"Bye, Bye Birdie" is a not
very subtle satire of Ameri
can life -it pokes fun at the
actions of teenagers, ridicules
American moms and their te
nacious tendencies when it
comes to sons, and scorns our
"rocky roll" singers and the
hysteria they cause among
the young-and sometimes the
not so young.
This laughing at ourselves
New British Cruiser

The $42 million Blake, 1.1

strain," according to the Ad
miralty. Construction of the
9,550 tori cruiser began in
1942 and it has sailed only
39,124 miles since being commissioned.
Obituaries
DAISY TALLMAN
Mrs. Daisy Tallman, of 746A
Oak St., Medford, died yester
day in a local nursing home.
Funeral services will be
held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in
Conger-Morris downtown cha
pel. Committal will be in
Lane Memorial park at Eugene.
INA BADGER
Ina Badger, 76, of route 2,
box 680, Central Point, died
Thursday evening in a local
hospital. Funeral arrange
ments will be announced by
Pcil Funeral home.
Births
GASCON-To Mr. and Mrs.
Roger E., route 1, box 12E,
Grants Pass, Feb. 21, 1963, a
boy, 8l,i pounds, at Rogue
Valley hospital.
McCOMB-To Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Del, 5735 Highway 99
south, Medford, Feb. 21, 1963,
a girl, 7 pounds, at Rogue
Valley hospital.
Locals
is wrapped up with tuneful
songs and good comedy lines,
and the audience loved It.
The cast for "Bye, Bye
Birdie" is extremely large,
and so it is virtually impossi
ble to mention more than the
leading players. Jarl Dyrud
and Chris Helman last night
played Albert Peterson, man
ager of Conrad Birdie, teen
age idol and rage of the enter
tainment world, and Rosie Al
varez, his secretary. Both
turned in excellent student
performances, and young Dy
rud's vocal work was some of
the best of the evening.
Tonight the roles will be
played by Jim Rowan and
Martha Billiard, and the orig
inal two will return to the
cast Saturday.
Actinc honors shnnlH on in
Judie Brookman for her play
ing of the over-dressed, over
posessive mother, to Garner
Hauoert for his nnrtraval nf
Mr. MacAfee, typical father
of a typical teen-age daughter,
and to Brian Porter whn was
the uncouth Conrad Birdie.
When Brian took to the mi
crophone dressed in flashy
clothing and with his body un
dulating constantly, he
seemed to make about the
same imnressinn as tho vmtna
men we see on national tele
vision shows. Maybe he
should get himself an agent.
Extra Dash Added
Tonight Tracy Blackstone
plays Mrs. Peterson and Reed
Harris is cast as Conrad. An
extra dash was added to the
enjoyment of those in the aud
ience who knew that the two
Haupert boys, Garner and
Fred, were playing father and
son: thev teampH )r.oih
very well.
Margaret Doolen makes a
pleasing Kim MacAfee, mem
ber of a Conrad Rirriio fan
club who is chosen to receive
nis farewell kiss before he
goes into the Armv mH In the
role she has one of the heav
iest singing parts. Tonight
Jacque Long will play Kim.
Patricia Selby turned in a
good performance as Mrs.
MacAfee.
The musical has many scene
changes-too many for the tim
ing of amateurs. Outstanding
scenes are "The Telephone
Hour" when a score of teen
agers lounge in a series of
cubicles, all talking and sing
ing at once and the "Shriner's
Ballet." The mass scenes of
teen-agers singing, swooning
ana dancing, are well man
aged and colorful.
The production was over
long last night, sometimes the
meaning of songs and scenes
was lost because of poor dic
tion and projection, both sing
ing and speaking, although
the impact remained.
On the whole, this musical
is amusing and entertaining
and Director Lynn Sjolund
and his many associates are
to be praised for the total re-sult.-O.S.
