Kennedys To Limit Reporter Activity At Social Affairs
Glacier Movements
Are Said to Vary
Chicago - m - The move
ment of glaciers is controlled
by many factors, says the Chi
cago Museum of Natural His
tory. In the Alps movements of
a foot a day are common,
whereas some glaciers in
Greenland move up to 100
feet a day.

The question of coverage
came up at Salinger's brief
ing Wednesday when a re
porter asked the "current sta
tus of negotiations of onsite
inspection of diplomatic re
ceptions." The first lady's press secre
tary. Pamela Turnure, an
nounced Tuesday a clamp
down on reporters at social
events. She told wire services
later, however, that she had
"misinterpreted" the sit u
ation. Salinger declined to give
any reason why Kennedy and
the first lady have decided to
curtail coverage of their
allowed to come in late in the
"I don t know what man
aged news is," he replied,
"nobody has defined this to
me."
Salinger also was asked to
comment on an irate state
ment trom Rep. Abner W.
Sibal (R-Conn.), who said
"The Kennedys are not the
owners of the While Houm;. :
Sibel said "The American
people own it and are inter
ested in who is being wined
and dined there by the first
family."
Salinger said he had not
seen the comment.
Sources said Mrs. Kennedy
for some time has wanted to
ban reporters from mixing
with guests at social affairs.
The President's wife, it was
said, feels that newswomen
with their pads and pencils
take away from the relaxed
atmosphere of her parties.
Mrs. Kennedy also is said
to feel that reporters should
not interview her guests.
Medford
Tribune:
House said Wednesday it is
taking a leaf from the Eisen
hower administration's note
book concerning press cover
age ol President and Mrs.
Kennedy's social events.
Press Secretary Pierre Sa
linger said the administration
has decided to change the
way reporters have been
allowed to cover White House
parties for the past two years
in favor of the policy fol
lowed by the Eisenhower ad
ministration. R.porLr Pool
Salinger said that from
now receptions will be cov
ered by a pool of reporters
who will be permitted to wit
ness the arrival of guests and
parties.
Since the Kennedy's came
into the White House, repor
ters have been allowed to
cover the receptions from
beginning to end and to mix
with the guests. At formal
dinner parties they have been
evening to cover the enter
tainment in the East Room.
Salinger was asked, "Is this
part of the new policy of
managed news?"
