The letter, a follow-up to
a briefing session by the Vet
erans Administration on all
activities, points up the medi
cal advantages offered in the
Medford area and requests
a review of the local facility
at the administration's "earli
est convenience."
Duncan, the new represent
ative from Oregon's fourth
district, describes the Veter
ans Administration briefing
as the best received since he
became a member of Con
gress. Understand Reasons
"I can understand fully the
reasons why you prefer to lo
cate your hospitals close to
medical schools," the con
gressman's letter reads in
part.
"But I understand that you
have a facility encompassing
a few beds at the Roaeburg
Psychiatric institution. I find
it difficult to understand why
in view of the number of doc
tors which are stationed at
Camp White, the number of
residents at the domiciliary
and the exceptionally high
quality of the medical profes
sion in the city of Medford,
you do not reactivate the sur
gery arid the wards so as to
take care of at least the ail
ments of the residents of the
domiciliary at White City.
"I think the only specialty
not represented in the prac
tice of medicine in Medford
is neurology," Duncan's let
ter continues.
Two Neurologists
"I know that they have at
least two neurologists there
and am advised that there is
only a minimal need for a
neurologist if neurosurgeons
are in practice. I also know
that there is at Camp White
a ward and a surgery or pos
sibly two which, . perhaps,
would require some moderni
zation to bring it up to 1963
standards, but which furnish
the nucleus at least for a well
equipped unit which might
very well eliminate the need
for constantly forwarding pa
tients to Portland by air and
ambulance."
The Oregon congress man
makes it clear that he is not
"pressing the administration
to inaugurate a veterans hos
pital in Medford if there Is
no need for one," but that he
"does hope that the adminis
tration will examine the need
carefully since there are no
facilities between San Fran
cisco and Portland to care for
veterans who need hospitali
zation." "If there is a need, how
ever, be it for a general hos
pital or for facilities such as
I have mentioned, then I think
that the facilities at Camp
White offer a splendid oppor
tunity for the Veterans Ad
ministration at minimum cost
to the federal government,"
Duncan noted.

WINNING DESIGN-Roy Gjertson, 36, ol
San Pedro, Calif., produced this winning
design in the Post Office Department's com
petition for a Battle of Gettysburg com
memorative postage stamp. It is a Confed
erate soldier against a gray background,
left, and a Union soldier against a blue back
ground. There were 1,000 entries in the con
test, the first ever conducted by the Post
Office Department. Gjertson won even
though he misspelled "Centennial". (UPI)
