Arctic Tours
How Available
From Norway
By MURRAY J. BROWN
United Press International
Bored with bird - watching,
boating, badmitton? Sated
with swimming, sailing, ski
ing? Tired of tennis, tea par
ties, the twist?
You can get away from it
all - for two weeks anyway
in the Land of the Midnight
Sun. You can explore the tun
dra and icy wastes of the
Arctic or, if that sounds too
tame, go hunting for polar
bears.
Seven Dolar bear safaris
are rjlanned for 1963, the Nor
wegian National Travel office
reports. Each hunter is li-
rnnisprt fnr tWO kills and, it
says "no hunter has failed to
bag at least one" during the
14-day big game hunts around
the islands of Spitsbergen in
the Arctic ocean.
If you are lucky and fill
your bag of the huge, white
bears early, you can try fish
ing for salmon or while away
the time by going sight - see
ing through the rugged land
of rocky fjords, mountain
peaks and glaciers.
Tromio, Norway
Jumping - off point for the
Rafaris is Tromso in northern
Norway.
Hunting parties are trans
ported to the islands about
400 miles north, aboard the
MS Fortuna, a ruRRed deisel-
powercd vessel. The all-inclusive
rHte includes the
services of seasoned guides.
Hunters provide their own
guns and ammunition.
Tromso also is the starting
point for something new and
different In 'cruises: "Arctic
Discovery tours."
Only three such tours have
been scheduled for 1963 and
each expldition will be re
stricted to 18 explorers. In
command of the exploration
parties will be Capt. Finn
Ronne, formerly of the U. S.
Navy, a vetcrn explorer of
the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Polar Pioneers
The Itinerary follows the
routes of such polar pioneers
as Byrd, Ellsworth and
Amundsen from Tromso to
Spitsbcrgan. There will be
shore excursions to arctic set
tlements and glaciers, then
north across the 81st parallel
Into the drifting pack Ice only
a tew hundred miles from the
North pole.
The return Journey In
cludes a call at the North
Cape and Hammerfest, which
claims to be the northern
most town In the world.
But unlike the polar pio
neers, you make the trek not
by sled or snowshoe but
aboard the sturdy MS Norsel,
veteran of 10 south polar ex
peditions. The rale for the 15-day ex
pedition includes cverything
even cocktail parties aboard
ship for the intrepid adven
turers. These can be started cllher
from Oslo, Norway, or Stock
holm, Sweden. If you leave
from Oslo you fly aboard SAS
airliner to Bodo In Norway
Inside the Arctic circle, then
go by car to Narvik. From
Narvik you travel by train
across the Nordland MUs. to
Klruna, in the heart of Swc
den's Lappland. and then by
SAS to Stockholm.

Noises Increase
Work Grievances
Rutherford, N.J.-Wrn-Clang-lng
machines, ringing tele
phones and the squceks and
screeches of a noisy work area
make employees mad at each
other, but don't decrease
work output.
A graduate student at Fair
leigh Dickinson university
came to that conclusion after
studying employee reaction in
three manual work areas of a
large electrical manufacturing
company.
The noise levels in the three
areas ranged from a deafen
ing 103 decibels through 90
decibels and down to 86 deci
bels. Joseph Sroka Jr. found the
noisiest area hud the highest
number of grievances. The
grievances also took longer to
settle.
But Sroka said the grievance-minded
employees earn
ed just as much In incentive
pay as employees in more
tranquil surroundings.
Sroka suggests the griev
ances stemmed from workers
who had to shout at each oth
er and then got mad when
they had to shout louder. He
says the workers may have
sought an outlet for this frus
tration by lodging grievances
(gainst the company.

Artichoke Flavor
Improved by Frost
New York - (UPD - Frost
bite darkens the leaves but
improves the flavor of arti
chokes, says the Artichoke
Advisory board. The darken
ed tips may be cut off easily
with kitchen shears.
The flavor is enhanced fur-'
thcr by the addition of a
tablespoon of salad oil or a
package of dry salad mix to
the water in which artichokes
are cooked.
