off a battle between AFL-CIO
president George Meany and
United Auto Workers presi
dent Walter Reuther was the
naming of a successor to L.
S. Buckmaster, who resigned
from the council.
Reulhor, an AFL-CIO vice
president, said Buckmaster
represented the unions which
made up the old CIO. There
fore, Reuther said those un
ions have the right to choose
his successor. Reuther was
backing Ralph Helstcin, presi
dent of the United Packing
house Workers Union, to fill
the vacancy.
But Meany, who claims
Ilelstein's union has left-wing
tendencies, maintained tile en
tire executive council had to
approve any nominee.

Harriman, 71, is a former
New York governor who has
a long record of diplomatic

Two Men Killed
In Tower Collapse
New York - IUPD - Rescue
squads Tuesday removed the
bodies of two men who were
killed when a water tower
collapsed on a roof and plung
ed through a six-story factory
in Brooklyn.
The victims were Abe D.
Bronstein, 43, and Michael M.
Spagnolo, 50, both of Brooklyn.
folice said the two men
were working on the third
floor of the building, occu
pied by the Spear Lighting
Fixture Manufacturing Co.,
when the tower came crash
ing through Monday.
Five of the injured admit
ted to Greenpolnt Hospital
were listed in critical condi
tion. The bodies of Branstein
and Spagnolo were recovered
on the first floor after fire
men, working with the aid of
searchlights, had braced the
weak-walled structure with
timber and steel borrowed
from the Brooklyn Navy
Yard.
It was not known what dis
lodged the tower from its
moorings.
