rTj 1359 SQUARE FEET !
JO ( w :?"
By HIAWATHA ESTES
For those faced with both a
modest lot and budget, we
have made the most of out
door living areas and used
every foot of interior floor
space to produce an altogether
pleasant and easy to maintain,
three bedroom design.
Eeveryone prefers a home
that looks much larger than it
actually is. You will discover
that even a small house such
as this one can be spacious'
looking and airy. Plenty ot
windows and sliding glass
doors help create this illusion
ol space. The absence of par
titlons in the living room-din-
ing and the kitchen-family
room areas emphasizes this ef
fect.
The outside measurements
of the garage are 22'x21'. By
offsetting the garage door, suf
ficient space has been created
to place the laundry facilities
In the garage as well as the
forced air furnace and water
heater.
This location means easier
servicing, less noise and vi
bration in the house and no
chance of ruining a floor in
case either the water healer
or washer should develop a
leak. There is access from the
garage to the family room and
also to the rear yard.
The living room is located
so there is no necessity of
walking through this room to
reach any other room. A guest
and storage closet separate the
entry from the living room.
This dining closet has been
designed for storage ot chinn
glasses and linens with enough
space remaining for a number
of other Items.
Nothing can tie up the dally
family routine quite so suc
cessfully as an Inadequate
bath arrangement. Here is an
excellent and economic solu
tion. The arrangement of
these back-to-bnek baths is
well worth study. They both
feature pullman lavatories

A BUTTERMILK 1,-
ilicial Limbs
Said Operated by
Nerve Impulses
Stockholm - (UPD - Soviet
doctors have successfully de
veloped artificial limbs which
can be operated by nerve Im
pulses from the handicapped
person's muscles, according to 1
the newspaper Dagens Ny-1
heter. j
In an interview with three
Swedish doctors now on a
study mission to Leningrad
and Moscow, Dagens Nyheter
Moscow correspondent Lars
Bringert also said the Rus
sians have replaced damaged
bones with those from dead
persons.
Bringert quoted the Swedes i
as saying only a few minor
problems remained before the
Russians could start large
scale production of the arti
ficial limbs. They are oper
ated by an electronic trans
former which picks up the
impulses from the muscles
when they are functioning,
he said. 1
The only specific limb men
tioned was an artificial hand,
but it was indicated other ;
limbs had been made to oper
ate on the same principle.
Wires Attached
Bringert said one of the
Swedish doctors, Prof. Carl
Hirsch, was allowed to try an '
artificial hand.
"Wires were attached tu my
upper arm," Hirsch said.
"Then the artificial limb was
placed on a table and when I
moved my hand the artificial ;
nana made identical movements."
The newspaper said a team
of doctors and technicians
headed by a Professor Popov
developed the technique and
they promised the Swedes
full access to Information on
It.
The Swedish doctors were
also quoted as saying Russian
doctors led by a Professor
Lapschinsky had developed a
technique of replacing dam
aged bones, especially joints,
with others taken from dead
bodies. Bringert said they had
successfully replaced thigh;
bones, knees and even hip
joints with this method.
Citrus Production !
Cut by Estimated
12 Per Cent
Washington - (UPD - The Ag
riculture Department esti
mates freezing temperatures
in December and January cut ,
the anticipated citrus produc-1
tion In Florida and California ;
by 22 per cent. I
The greatest decline Is for
oranges, primarily because of 1
the December freeze in Flor
ida. Although low tempera-'
turcs in January damaged
California citrus, the estimat
ed California orange crop is
larger than last year. If there .
had been no freeze, California
prospects would have been
considerably better. I
21 Per Cent Smaller
The prospective orange crop
for the 19B2-U3 season now
stands at 10! million boxes, '
21 per cent smaller than last
season's record crop and 11
per cent below average. Flor
ida, which produced 113,400,
000 boxes last season, Is ex
pected to produce only 81 mil
lion boxes this season. Cali
fornia's orange crop will be
27 million boxes compared
with 20,700,000 boxes a year
earlier.
The early, midseason, and
navel orange crop this year
will be 9 per cent less than
last season, while the Va
lencia orange crop will be
one-third less than a year
earlier.
The current grapefruit crop
will be 17 per cent smaller
than that of a year earlier,
the lemon crop will be 22 per
cent less, tangeles 25 per cent
less and tangerines 50 per
cent less.
STOOD OUT
Washington - (ITD - When
Walter Johnson posted a 36-7
record in 1913, the entire rest
of the Washington Senators'
pitching staff accounted for
only 54 victories.
