U. 5. To Cut Back
Overseas Military
Washington-iUPIThe United
States plana to bring home
about 40,000 of the 400,000
American military men in Eu
rope. Most of the overseas reduc
tion will be made over the
next year. Barring some big
new international crisis, the
entire 10 per cent cut is ex
pected to be completed in
about two years.
Both rear area troops are
involved in the planned cut
back, which partly is designed
to reduce the dollar outflow
and Improve the U.S. balance
of payments.
U.S. Allies already are be
ing pressed to increase man
power in their NATO-assigned
forces. NATO has a goal
of 28 'j divisions in Central
Europe, including five Ameri
can. But several are below
full strength and the present
number of effective divisions
probably is fewer than 23.
Of the 102 West Pointers
who cam back into the
Union army during the Civil
War, SI became generals.
These included Ulysses S.
Grant, George B. McClellan
and William T. Sherman.
