Ashland r A new concept
of Oregon's growth ia needed
as increased population
brings new opportunities as
well as new problems to the
state, Glenn L. Jackson, vice
chairman of tne board of Pa
cific Power and Light, Med
ford industrialist and chair
man of the state highway
commission, told the crowd
attending the awards banquet
I here last week.
"No longer should Oregon's
economy be geared to the
price of two by fours," he
said.
Basing his address upon the
findings of the recently re
leased Soher survey, Jackson
reviewed the state's growth
in the fields of agriculture,
tourism, mining, electronics,
clothing and chemical indus
tries and even the newest
source of income retirement
living.
Quotes Statistics
Quoting 1082 statistics he
showed that of the 520,000
gainfully employed Oregon
ians only 18 per cent were in
the lumber industry. He be
lieves this to be a transition
period, but is optimistic that
diversification of lumber
products will be an important
development.
In agriculture the prospects
are tremendous Jackson feels,
since this stale is fast becom
ing the Pacific coast bread
basket as California's explod
ing population takes farm
lands out of production
Oregon's third largest in
come, tourism, amounts to
$217 million each year. It is
predicted that the total of 7
million visitors of 1962 will
become 20 million in 1970. In
this connection recreational
development is of highest im
portance and the area of
southern Oregon has an un
limited potential.
Jackson commented upon
the Mt. Ashland ski resort as
well as the lakes and declared
that with completion of the
freeway this year and addi
tional east and west roads this
area will become a distribu
tion center of the Pacific
coast. He said that the jet age
is making existing air fields
obsolete and that reconstruc
tion of runways at the Med
ford airport will be necessary
to handle freight facilities.
Recognised for Culture
Southern Oregon is recog
nized for its culture as well
as its climate, declared the
speaker, and has a bright fu
ture in rapidly expanding
Southern Oregon college, as
well as the Shakespearean
Festival.
The speaker warned that
southern Oregon's predicted
50 per cent population
growth in the next 10 years
will bring with it serious
problems, some of which are
already causing concern. In
creasing water pollution and
decreasing supply of potable
water is becoming one of
