THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 7. 1963
Waitangi, New Zealand-flTO-Ten
thousand New Zealanders
gave Britain's Queen Eliza
beth and Prince Philip a roar
ing welcome Wednesday when
they arrived by boat from the
Fiji Islands.
The queen, wearing a tur
quoise blue dress, was greeted
by Gov. Gen. Sir Bernard Fer
gusson and his wife. Radio
commentators on the scene
promptly dubbed her "the
lady in blue."
Today Is the 11th anniversa

the throne and among the
welcoming crowd were 3,000
Maoris whose descendants
signed a treaty with Queen
Victoria 123 years ago ac
knowledging her sovereignty.
The royal yacht anchored
off Waitangi in fine, warm
weather.
The queen, looking pert
and bright, told the crowd she
was anticipating revisiting
sights well remembered from
her last trip here in 1953.

The first person lo teach

When she "blew her top," big

To get rid of them she would

a man, and she could not
make up her mind what to
do with her unloved husband.
The next woman to come
in covered with big hives
was also madly in love with
a man, but he was married
and had children to bring up
on a small salary. She could
not make up her mind what
to do.
Dismissed in Disgrace
Another person covered
with big hives was a man who
had been dismissed in dis
grace from a good position;
still another sufferer was a
man who, on being offered
the position of sales man
ager in a big company, had
thrown up the good position
he had. Then the vice presi
dent, who had offered him the
position, had to confess that
the president of the company
had decided to give the place
to his nephew. With this
great disappointment, my pa
tient broke out with the big
gest hives I ever saw.
Later, t saw several high
school girls who got big hives
at every examination time,
and I saw a few brides who
broke out with big hives on
their wedding day. One poor
girl became covered with big
hives when the scamp who
had promised to marry her
left her "waiting at the
church."
Another sad woman, a
school-teacher of 40, was so
happy when she maried a pro
fessional man. Two days
later, when he confessed that
he had no money and no
practice and expected to live
off of her, her skin broke out.
Fatigue or Excitement
I have often been interest
ed to see that strong emotion
or fatigue of excitement can
so sensitize the skin that it
will break out in big hives
when perhaps some one food
is eaten. For instance, I re
member a woman who could
usually eat chocolate with im
punity, but if she ate it when
her much-dreaded mother-in-law
was even on the way to
visit her, she broke out with
big hives. Another woman
could wear wool next to her
skin if she was happy, but if
she wore it when she was
very anxious over the antics
of her alcoholic husband, she
broke out in a big red rash
Similarly, a surgeon friend
of mine could ordinarily
"scrub up" for an operation
with a brush and strong soap
if the night before he had had
eood rest. If he had spent
much of the night patching up
neonle injured in an auto
wreck, however, the skin of
his hands and arms could not
stand scrubbing.
The skin of some people
can do strange things. Thus
for years I knew a woman
patient who, on inadvertently
eating a bit of pineapple hid
den perhaps in a salad, would
get one big hive, always on
her right buttock. This kept
happening for 20 years. Even
more curious was the fact
that my patient's nephew and
niece had the same ex
perience.
