Dr. Martin S. Beuhler, Gra
ham's physician, said Tuesday
the evangelist has responded
well to treatment.
"If his satisfactory progress
continues, he will be able to
participate in the President's
prayer breakfast," Beuhler
said.
Graham will be limited to
appearance at the breakfast.
He will then go home to Mon
treal, N.C.. for a rest. There
was no indication how long
he might remain at home.
Graham was admitted to
Baylor hospital in Dallas Mon
day. He came to Dallas last
week to address a laymen's
conference. A high fever de
veloped and he entered the
hospital.

today.

The land for the most part

The pod of the mangrove
tree-long, slender and hard-is
a common object on many of
the warmer beaches of the
world. Children call the ob
jects "sea-pencils."
There are many fascinating
facts typical of this seaside
tree as interesting as the"sand
pencils" themselves. Probably
no other living thing, with the
posible exception of the coral
animal, has done as much in
extending coastlines all over
the tropical or semi-tropical
world as has this tree. Under
favorable conditions, it forms
nearly impenetrable jungles,
often for hundreds of miles.
Rudyard Kipling said of the
mangrove, "They march down
to the sea." They do exactly
that. The long aerial roots
drop down from the horizon
tal branches in a lace-like cur
tain. When they touch the
muddy shore, they take root
and the tree "marches along
on stilt-like roots. To further
extend the range of the tree,
the seed pods, or sand pencils,
float in the sea seeking other
shores.
Seeds sprout before they
fall from the parent tree and
they are ready to start grow
ing the minute they touch the
mud. The roots from the over
head branches resemble the
banyan tree inasmuch as they
will form into trunks.
Bridge-Like Slruciur
The mangrove actually con
structs for itself a trestle or
a bridge-like structure on
which it can continue further
growth and maintain a suit
able height above the salt wa
ter for the green leaves. Every
incoming tide brings in sea
weed and debris of every de
scription which lodges around
the tangle of roots. Every
wave deposits a load of sand
onto the retaining material
held by the tree until a base
is built and the beach rises,
the growth always extending
seaward.
The recurrent submersion
of the aerial roots and lower
trunks makes possible the
growth of barnacles and oys
ters until, at times, the roots
and trunk are completely cov
ered with shellfish and other
marine growth. People seeing
tins tor tne tirsl time can
hardly believe that oysters ac
tually do grow on trees.
The presence of this marine
growth also contributes to the
ease and rapidity of the build
ing process, adding its bit to
Nature's construction plan.
The mangrove trees have held
shores together when hurri
canes lashed the beaches.
They have protected and saved
many miles of coastline from
washing away as a result of
wave or tidal action.
Mangrove swamps have al
ways been havens for small
boats when hurricanes threat- j
ened the land. Only a few I
years elapse until a mangrove
island becomes an area of dry
land. The roots do for the
island what reinforcing steel
does for concrete.
Oval, Shiny
Tlie leaves of the American
mangrove are oval, dark
green and shiny on the upper
surface. The tree has pale
yellow flowers. The wood is
hard, reddish brown in color,
often streaked with traces of
light tan.
Contrary to what one would
think, a mangrove forest is
not a lonesome place. A host
of creatures call this home.
Egrets and many other shore
birds build nests in the tangle.
Fiddler crabs hurry In and
out among the roots. A small
mollusk, called the peri
winkle, crawls over the limbs
and roots, while just below,
an army of crabs marches in
endless procession.
The tree that marches does
not "walk alone."
