Billiards for Women Becoming Popular Game

fabulous little guy who has
spent most of his life in pool
halls has decided to get the
ladies interested in knocking
the ivories around.
Willie Mosconi, one of tha
greatest billiard experts who
ever lived, has established
Willie Mosconi enterprises pri
marily to lure the female of
the species into one of the last
refuges for men only.
Mosconi's idea has two
parts: first, attractive billiard
centers-not, please, pool halls.
Second, a handicapping sys
tem that will put the duffer
on a competitive level with
the expert (formerly known as
shark).
Mosconi will franchise Wil
lie Mosconi Billiard centers,
each to be built to his specifi
cations and featuring specially
loomed carpeting and an at
tractive color scheme in addi
tion to custom-made colorful
equipment. ,
The handicapping system,
which still is in the final de
velopment stage, will let the
beginner - or lady - compete
with the skilled player. It is
hoped it will foster billiards
as a husband-and-wife sport,
something along the order of
bowling.
An added attraction will be
Mosconi, of course. Willie will
tour his franchised billards
centers giving exhibitions and
pointers on how to play the
game.
Mosconi, 48, was born 1 n
South Philadelphia. He gave
his first exhibition match
when he was 7 years old. Nor
mally this would indicate a
m I s s p e n t life, beginning
early.
But in Mosconi's case, it
meant that a top athlete sim
ply began practicing early
and developed a natural talent
to the point where he won his
first tournaments while still
in his teens and was compet
ing with the championship
calibre professionals when he
was only 18 years old.
He has held the world's title
for IS of the last 18 years, and
holds the record for scoring a
high run of pocketing 526
straight balls, beating his own
previous record of 365.
Almost 70 per cent of Geor

study of 100 local families,
directed by Prof. Kathryn
Walker, of the New York
State college of home eco
nomics at Cornell university.
The survey also showed
that shopping time, including
planning, transportation and
putting tne groceries
averaged 3.4 hours a week.
The range was from 2.8 hours
for families of two to four
hours for families of five or
more.
Another point reported was
that a family with income of
more than $7,000 spends
about an hour less shopping
time than families in the $3,
000 - $4,999 Income bracket.
