Medford higii's Black Tor
nado, burning with the fierce
desire to project itself back
into the thickest of the thick
in the Southern Oregon con
ference basketball titular
chase, attained an Immediate
objective on Friday night.
The Pear city Hurricane
clipped the league - heading
Crater Comets 67 to 58 here
at a jammed-full Hedrick gym.
A week of lighter work
paid off for the Tornadoes.
They held no scrimmages in
their four days of preparation.
Aim was to play their games
on Friday and Saturday nights
rather than in the middle of
the week. It worked for Fri
day night.
Medford's will to win cag
ers played strong defense and
they were the sharper, surer,
steadier team over the full
joute. They took the lead
early and held it the remain
der of the game. Victory, how
ever, was not secure until the
final moments of the hassle.
The Tornadoes built up a 13
point difference in the second
quarter but the fighting Fire
balls came up to within a
point in the third.
Forde Spurs
Then, Medford widened and
held the Comets off by five to
nine point margins. The Hur
ricanes turned to ball control
in the tail end of the closing
period and in the final mo
ments led by 11.
Jack Forde's scoring and
backboard talents, the shoot
ing of Dick Deffley, the re
bounding work of Jim Hill
and Rich Benner and the
stellar, scrappy floor play of
ballhawking Dan Miles, along
with Larry Vowell and Deff
ley, went into the making of
the triumph.
The Tornado's victory was
its third in seven conference
games. Crater suffered its sec
ond loss and seven. Outcome
enabled idle Klamath Falls to
assume a first place tie with
Crater and set up last night's

It's welded.

How strong does this make the VW truck?
Strong enough to carry procticoily a ton of stuff.
(1,830 pound?, to bs exact.!
The omazing thing is that the VW weighs only about
half as much as 0 conventional, light-duty truck. Yet, it's
strong enough to hold olmost twice as much.
Of course, the fact that rl.e VW doesn't have a
