Eagle Point - With the re
cent better weather, up un
til late last week,, residents
In flood stricken 'areas dou
bled their efforts to restore
their places beak to their nor
mal conditions and in many
casing, improving them.
Many home owners started
work on cleaning up debris
the following morning.
Trees and brush washed
and piled against fences and
left In yards and pastures are
being cleaned up. It is either
used for firewood or burned
near the site. Youngsters help
pick up rocks and remove
gravel from lawns and flower
beds.
Farmers have been remov
ing rocks and gravel from
fields and in some cases ma
chinery has been used to
scrape the fields. Walls . of
rocks have been made along

organisation for a group in
terested in studying the Lit
tle Butte creek watershed
were accepted at a recent
meeting here.
The group hope to de
velop a plan for protecting
the area from possible fu

regular flood waters, a 12
foot high dam was crerted a
short distance from the house
by trees and logs lodging be
tween standing trees. The
raging waters battered a large
tree against one side of their
home, taking out all of the
large windows and a door,
and removing about 12 inches
of their lawn.
A contractor was called the
next morning, and work was
started to replace a wall, re
finish hardwood floors, and
repair other damage.
Water filled the house four
feet deep. Concrete steps to
the from porch were picked
up and carried several feet,
iodging against a tree. Farm
equipment owned by the fam
ily was removed from brush
and debris.
The land owner remarked
that he could not have gotten
his property into shape if it
had not been for neighbors
who offered help.
On the brighter side, many
fields and yards had some
piled up brush and trash re
moved, and in some cases top
soil was left.
Other residents lost a con
siderable amount of soil fioni
their yards. Bridges of steel
and heavy logs are replacing
wooden bridges which were
washed out.
For the first time in several
years, it is possible to see the
creek and serosa the creek in
many areas where thick-
grown blackberry and wild
grape vines collected debris
over a period of time, shutting
off the view.
Residents along the creek
are considering ways of
straightening the creek where
small sections of land and
trees form a curve. The creek,
although its channel has been
considerably widened, needs
a considerable amount of gen
eral cleaning.
According to Eagle Point
City Administrator O r i n
Chastain, the city is planning
a week end cleanup in the
near future. The clean up will
be under the direction of
David Hannaford. Residents
will be asked to help clean
up the creek area within the
city limits.
Further action on flood
control work along the creek
is pending receipt of a report
from an area committee ap
pointed to survey and deter
mine what can be done.
Some area residents were
given aid through the Ameri
can Red Cross and others ob
tained disaster loans. The
biggest improvement prob
ably will be noted in clean
ing up individual residences
to make the Eagle Point area
a residential area of which
the people will be proud.
