I wouldn't recommend it for

The reading clerk job be
came vacant last year with
the untimely death of the vet
eral George Maurer, who was
widely regarded as one of the
best reading clerks the House
has ever had.
In hiring a new reading
clerk, House officials do not
rely entirely on patronage
considerations as they might
in hiring, say, a bill clerk, an
enrolling clerk, a file clerk, a
journal clerk or a tally clerk.
This is because a reading
clerk mutt have rather
ipecial talents, not the least
of which is the ability to
pronounce correctly the
names of all 435 members
of the House.
When you consider that
some congressmen have diffi
culty pronouncing their own
names, then you begin to have
an inkling of the magnitude
of the job.
Not only must the reading
clerk be able to pronounce
the nanits, he also must be
able to recognize the faces
of the House members. This
requires a strong stomach as
well as a good memory.
Furthermore, he must be
able to talk louder than the
435 House members, both in
dividually and collectively. In
other words, he must make
himself heard over a babble of
voices, the volume of which
can exceed that of the sound
track of "Ben Hur" during
the chariot race.
More important yet, he
must master the art ot half
talk, which sets him apart
from the congressmen them
selves, whose second lang
uage is double-talk.
Half-talk is the ability to
skip over at least half of the
words in a long bill, message
or amendment and still give
the impression of reading
with continuity.
Since a proper voice is so
essential, the 28 applicants for
the reading clerk lob were
given an audition, like actors,
auctioneers and hog callers.
