Tonight; Tornado at Ashland
Saturday,
It's certain that there will
be a full house at the Hcdrick
gym here tonight. The ques
tion is:
What's In the cards for a
couple of Southern Oregon
conference basketball aggre
gations? The closest neighbors In
the Class A-l circuit, Mcdford
and Crater High schools, con
tend on the local floor. Tip
off Is billed at 8:13 p.m.
This conflict will be one of
our this week end within the
circuit. Ashland will go to
Grants Pass tonight. Saturday
evening slate is Mcdford at
Ashland and Crater at Klam
ath Falls.
Crater goes into the week
end tussles the loop leader
with a 5-1 murk. Klamath is
5-2, Grants Pass 4-3, Mcdford
2-4 and Ashland 0-6.
The four games will bring
the conference to the midway
point of the chase as the re
spective adversaries battle
each other for the second
time this season. In first
round fracases Crater tripped
Medford 68 to 63 and downed
Klamath Falls 5D to 57 in
overtime. Mcdford won 75
to 41 from Ashland and
Grants Pass beat Ashland 67
to 39.
Toiaup Games
On the strength of those
first games. The Medford
Crater and Klamath - Crater
embroilments would rate as
tossups and Grants Pass and
Medford would be big favor
ites over Ashland. But, on the
basis of Ashuawl tussles
against Crater and Klamath
Falls neither Hie Cavemen of
GP nor tile Tornado of Mcd
ford arc underestimating the
Grizzlies.
With a pair of contests this
week. Crater has the oppor
lunily io stretch to a two
game lead in the conference

Tonight, however, the Medford Black Tor
nado attention will be focused on the Crater

Comets Vie at KF

second place.
Mcdford needs victories in
both contests to get back into
the running.
Medford Coach Frank Roe

"We're sure sweating it,"

Mcdford, he pointed out that
the Tornado's back is against

We'll be awfully shallow

In drills this week, Kell
slated, "We've been trying to

Portland A three-way
battle is taking place for the
Oregon Collegiate Confer
ence scoring title at the half
way point In conference ac
tion. The new leader this
week is Willie Anderson of
Oregon Tech with 175 points
and a 21.9 average for eight
games. He replaces Southern
Oregon's Dave Hughes who
was idle last week.
Pressing Anderson in the
light point race is Portland
State freshman John Nelson
with 169 points and a 21.1
average per game. Tech's
Sammy Smith is third with
105 and a 20.6 average.
Hughes dropped to fourth at
152 points.
Bob Marr of OCE took over
the field goal accuracy lead
with a .523 percentage on 23
of 44 shots. Among more fre
quent shooters, Dave Hughes
is best with 62 field goals on
125 shots for a .496 average.
Portland State's Gary Linn
has an .833 shooting percent
age from the free throw line
on 10 of 12 shots but among
those with more opportun
ities, Toby Wolf of OCE has
hit .826 per cent of his shots, I
making 38 of 46.
Smith and Anderson of OTI
are running away with the re
bounding race. Smith, two-
time OCC rebound leader,
heads' the pack with 143 re
trieves, an average of 17.8 per
game. Anderson has cleared
120 for an average of 15 per
contest. Anderson also is the
season's scoring leader in the
OCC with 337 points in 17
games for a 19.8 points per
game average. Hughes is sec
ond at 286 and Bob Myers of
EOC is third at 284.
In team statistics, Oregon
Tech is the offensive leader
with an average of 82.5 points
a game while Portland State
is the top defensive team,
yielding only 67.7 points a
game, Tech also leads in free
throw shooting with a team
average of .659, and team re
bounds with an average of 48
per game. Southern Oregon is
best shooting from the field
with a .472 percent accuracy
mark.
Conference action this week
end sends Tech against Port
land State for two games that
could virtually wrap up the
third straight OCC title for
the Owls. The Viks need no
worse than a split to remain
in contention for the runner
up spot and the Dist. 2 NAIA
playoff bcrtn. Southern Ore
gon is at Eastern Oregon for a
pair while Oregon college
draws the weekly bye.

In Extra
By MARTIN LADER
UPI Sports Writer
Cincinnati boasts two for
midable weapons in its bid
for an unprecedented third
straight NCAA championship
-not only does it have the best
college basketball team in the
nation but today it also must
own the luckiest.
The Bearcats took a 33
game winning streak into
Thursday night's game against
Drake, and it should have
been little more than a work
out for the country's top
ranked squad on its home
court. Instead, unheralded
Drake fought fiercely for ev
ery point and dragged Cincin
nati into an overtime period
before falling to the Bearcats'
superior might by 65-60.
The consequences probably
would have been more serious
for the below-par Cincinnati
team if it had been up against
one of the more powerful foes
on its tough schedule.
Loyola of Chicago, ranked
No. 2, kept pace with the
Bearcats and maintained its
hopes for an unbeaten season
by routing Washington Uni
versity of St. Louis, 118-38
for its 19th straight win.
In key conference games
Thursday night, Kentucky
overcame Georgia, 74-67, and
Wake Forest took sole posses
sion of first place in the At
lantic Coast conference by
beating South Carolina, 54-45.
George Wilson was the in
dividual hero for Cincinnati,
registering five of his team's
seven points in overtime. Tom
Thacker, who led the Bear
cats' comeback in the final
minutes of the second half,
lost his chance of glory as he
blew a free throw attempt
with six seconds remaining.
