Secure in Her Job

Automation is. cutting deeply
into employment ranks In a
wide variety of occupations
but, as a pork dropper, Ge
neva Long feels secure in her
job.
Miss Long's function is to
drop pork cubes into bean
cans as they whiz along a
packing line at the Stokely
Van Camp plant here. She
plops in the pork at the rate
of about 10,000 to 12,000 cans
an hour.
The efficiency people have
given her job a hard look but
have come to the conclusion
there's only one way to put
the pork in pork and beans:
by hand.
Miss Long has been pork
dropping for 33 years and she
says she rarely misses. She's
more likely to drop an extra
drop than to slight a container.

ford, completed a special
three-day short course recent
ly at the Oregon State univer
sity school of forestry.
The course covered variable
plot cruising, an improved
method for determining the
volume of stiinding or wind
thrown timber.
Oregon Slale has offered
the course each of the past
seven years as a service to
the forest Industry. Five dif
ferent short courses covering
various forestry subjects are
scheduled this year.
