Animal with Higheil IQ
Don't Socialize with Humani
Any animal we personally
dislike, we consider slupia,
dumb and ignorant. If we dis
like cats, wc say they arc
about as dumb as any crea
ture. II we have a fondness
for dogs we give that animal
the benefit of the doubt and
figure our family pet is pretty
smart.
The love and belief in the
dog's intelligence is under
standable, for a dog has usu
ally been a part of just about
everyone's household some
time or other. Wc also feel
that a dog's close and rather
intimate association with man
kind, over so many eons of
lime, would naturally instill
in the animal some of our own
intelligence. We feel a great
deal of our knowledge must
have rubbed off on our four-
footed friend.
This human ego, in the
light of scientific experiment,
has not borne out our ideas,
not at least to our satisfaction.
Even if our dog "can do ev
erything but talk," he docs
rate somewhat lower in IQ
than many of the other spe
cies of animals. For some pe
culiar reason the animals with
the highest IQ rating are
thbie that have had little or
no direct contact with the hu
man race. This sort of damp
ens our ego. At least it should.
Mora Sense?
Ever since man himself
reached a stage in his devel
opment where he had the in
telligence to think and to rea
son, he has pondered the pos
sibility that the so-called low
er animals just might have
more "sense than they are
credited with having. Un
like man, animals cannot read,
write or build a schoolhouse, I
but they can and do accom
plish those actions and things
that help them to survive.
With this in mind, science
has looked with interest at
some of our animal friends
and has come up with some
startling facts. Science agrees
with what most of us believed
all the time: that the cow,
sheep and even the horse are
pretty low in animal intelligence.
We have coined expressions j
lo indicate some animal's stu
pidity. Wc say, silly a:
goose, dumb bunny, and crazy
like a fox." We might be sur
prised lo find the fox, a close
relative of the family dog, is !
no whizbang in the field of
the Intellect. Wc admit, too,
that the shark that lives in i
the sea is about as stupid as
they come.
Line Prolly Dim
An animal's IQ rating Is
established bv the method it
can reason out a problem for
itself, how long it Ukes to
reach a conclusion and what
it has learned by the experi
ence What the animal has
been taught by constant rep
etition may be an ability to
retain knowledge, but is not
an indication of how much the
animal knows. The line be
tween intellect and instinct
is pretty dim and may even
overlap: even the most expert
human cannot be sure wheth
er or not the animal is really
trying.
The old familiar chimp
holds a place pretty high in
the scale and alongside him,
and maybe a little ahead, is
a newcomer to the college, the
porpoise. He's about as smart
as they come and much more
intelligent than most h'.mans
would admit; in fact, there
are those amonu us a little
jealous of the animal's intelli
gence. This character deserves
a diploma.
Don't gel the idea Hint just
human being have all the in
telligence. If you think that,
you are in for a shock one of
these days, because open-
minded, unbiased observers
can knock human conceit on
this point into the well-known
cocked hat.
College Teacher
Reduction Sought
Salem -ITI- Elimination of
!)!t new college leaching po
sitions to save M.7 million
was advocated Tuesday by
Legislative Fiscal Officer
Kenneth Bragg
The proposal would add
344 new faculty members to
the higher education ssi.'in
by I!)(i4 ti5. instead of the 44:1
sought both by tin- governor
and the Board of Higher Edu
cation. It would give the system
proportion of 17 students to
one teacher, instead of the
1H1 to 1 ratio proposed in
the governor's budget.
Biagg said he doubted Hi"
quality of higher education
would be impaired by the reduction.

Blind Woman Is
Ardent Bowler
Tulsa, Okla. -(UPD- A grand
mother, 82. who has never
seen the interior of a bowling
alley - and never will - has
hopes of raising her 45-pin
bowling average and breaking
10U.
Mrs. Thomas J. Barkley re
cently won a runner-up trophy
in an Oklahoma City tourna
ment, despite a handicap. She
is blind.
The silver-haired Mrs. Bark
Icy, sightless since an opera
tion three years ago, had nev
er been inside a bowling alley
until last summer. A friend
encouraged her to take up the
popular pastime.
Mrs. Barkley visited a Tul
sa community center and be
came acquainted with several
other handicapped persons.
Soon, she was working in cer
amics and bowling with the
others.
The bowlers formed a team
and began bowling each Tues
day afternoon. A Tulsa soft
drink company furnished the
kcglcrs with shirts.
In late October, the Tulsans
traveled to Oklahoma City to
take on a team of handi
capped bowlers there. Mrs.
Barkley averaged 69 pins a
game and won the second
place trophy.
"We're just like one big
happy family," she said of her
bowling friends.
"I once had a 98 game. I
think I can hit 100 someday."
Mrs. Barkley swore off
bowling long enough to cele
brate her 65th wedding anni
versary recently. Her husband
doesn't bowl. He's almost a
"bowling widower."
Mrs. Barkley said she s
urned over the kitchen chores
to her 86-ycar-old husband, al
though she still does most of
the housework.
The active Tulsan may be
getting a little older, but she's
not about to slow down.
Rocking chairs are for presi
dents and old people, she
said, as she prepared to bowl
another line.
Medical Advice
Given Travelers
Cliicago-flOT-The American
Medical association has an
nounced some health and safe
ty tips for those planning
I winter trips abroad.
If you wear glasses, take
along your lens prescription,
so that a broken lens can be
replaced.
If you have diabetes, check
with your doctor to make cer
tain of a source of supply of
insulin abroad. Also wear a
tag or carry a card identify
ing yourself as a diabetic.
If in doubt about the water
supply, order bottled water.
Remember that ice in soft
drinks and cocktails is no
safer than the water from
which it is made.
Canned or evaporated milk
is safer than fresh milk in
most parts of the world. The
AMA advises caution about
eating raw fruits and vegetables.
Check with your travel of
fice regarding vaccination re
quirements of the countries
you plan to visit. And don t
I forget that Uncle Sam re
quires a recent smallpox vac
cination certificate for reentry.
