Yale Coach
Resigns
. New Haven. Conn.-(OT-Yale
University officials may not
have to roam too far afield
jn seeking a new head foot
ball coach.
Jordan Olivar presumably
caught the Eli athletic office
by surprise Monday night
Avhen he announced he was
relinquishing what amounted
ti a lifetime contract as Yale
cjach to devote all his time
to his insurance business in
Beverly Hills, Calif.
- There had been reports that
he 48-year-old native New
Yorker was considering re
signing at the end of the 1962
season when the Elis won
only twe of nine games. How
ever, athletic director De
Jancy Kiphuth s;.id no steps
had been taken to find a suc
cessor because it had been
hoped Olivar would change
his mind.
But when Olivar made it
official Monday night, at least
four men automatically be
came leading candidates for
his job. They were assistant
coaches Harry Jacunski, Jer
ry Neri and An Paimo, and
veteran defensive end Andy
Robustelli of the New York
Giants.

Fame Hall
Adds Four
New York -IUPD- Sam Rice
and Eppa Rixey displayed
happiness mixed with bitter
ness and 87-year-old Elmer
Flick said, "I figured I was
too old for anybody to remem
ber me."
That was the reaction of
three of baseball's old-timers
who were elected Sunday to
the Hall of Fame along with
John Clarkson, a National
league pitcher before the turn
of the century who died 53
years ago.
Rice, repeatedly passed over
in past balloting by the main
body of the Baseball Writers'
association of America, final
ly won the nod from the Hall
of Fame's 12-man veterans
committee. He and Rixey were
elected from a category of
players who retired between
1931 and 1943.
Clarkson and Flick were
chosen from another category
of old-timers who retired be
fore 1931.
Rice and Rixey both admit
ted they were "very happy"
over their selection. However,
they wondered out loud why
they didn't rate entry to the
Hall years ago.
MBA Will Stay
With 9 Teams
New York - (UPD - The Na
tional Basketball Association
will go along with nine clubs
next season, but left room for
a Baltimore franchise if a
team wishes to change its
base of operations.
NBA president Maurice
Podoloff said the league's
board of governors found "no
sentiment for expansion at
this time" at a meeting Mon
day. Podoloff said the clubs will
be asked to submit a report
at the annual meeting on May
1 and to state if they wish to
remain at their present home
city.
Baltimore, which has been
denied a franchise the past
two years, will be given first
choice in the event a switch
is desired by any of the pres
ent club owners.
GOLDEN BOY

weight Richard Sue, Portland,
was named "Golden Boy" for
the second straight year after
he knocked out another Port
land boxer, Lonny Bates, in
the second round of a Golden

NFL Owners
Open Session
Miami Beach - (UPI) - Na
tional Football league club
owners open their annual
winter meeting here today
with a two-phased investiga
tion into gambling allegations
the unofficial main topic.
League Commissioner Pete
Rozelle made a brief, in
formal report to the owners
on progress of his own inves
tigation Monday night on the
eve of the formal sessions, but
did not disclose what he had
said.
Word of a second investi
gation, apparently touching
other sports as well, came
from Washington where Sen.
John L. McClellan (D-Ark.)
chairman of a Senate investi
gating s u b c o m mittee, con
firmed he had sent a staff
member to San Francisco to
"check on reports" of sports
gambling.
There was nothing about
the Investigations on the of
ficial agenda for the three
day owner meetings.
