Take Place in Eugene
Mr. and Mra. David Lau
ranee Espey, whose marriage
was a recent event in Eugene,
are living at 268 West Sev
enth street in that city. The
bride is the former Miss Janet
Kay Merrill and both are for
mer Medford residents.
The bride's parents, Mr
and Mrs. Walter B. Merrill,
live at 17 North Grovcland
avenue, Medford, and the
bridegroom's parents are Mr.
and Mrs. Laurance V. Espey,
619 Park street, Medford.
The bride is a Medford
High school graduate and also
a graduate of the Eugene Sac
red Heart hospital school of
nursing. The bridegroom, a
Medford St. Mary'a High
school graduate, also attended
Southern Oregon college and
the Merchant Marine acad
emy at Kings Point, N.Y.
The high noon nuptial mass
was celebrated January S in
the Eugene St. Mary's Catho
lic church. Monsignor Ed
mund J. Murnane officiated
and the Dale Culy choir sang.
Miss Faye Mendlguren,
Eugene, a roommate of the
bride, was maid of honor, and
Wayne C. Osterman, Milwau
kie, Ore., a brother-in-law of
the bridegroom, was best
man.
Kenneth Moty, Klamath
Falls, and Eric Jensen, Med
ford, both cousins of the
bridegroom, seated the guests.
Benefit Club
Considering
Insurance Plan
About 90 members of the
Security Benefit club, includ
ing three new members from
Ashland and one from Med
ford, attended the luncheon
meeting of the club last
Wednesday In the Pythian
building. Those with birth
days in January were hon
ored. The new members are Mr.
and Mrs. Claude Myers and
Mrs. Hazel Wiggs, Ashland,
and Mrs. Grace Morgan, Medford.
Sealed at the table for the
honored guests were Waller
Krug, Mrs. Cora Peterson,
Mrs. Ruth Hutchison, Mrs,
Charley Laffcrty, and Mrs.
Grace Galbraith.
Cakes were furnished by
Mrs. Krug, Mrs. Barbara Ma-
guin, Mrs. Ella Russell, Mrs.
Mamie Bryant, Mrs. Susie
Johnsburg and Mrs. Florence
Swift.
At the meeting an insur
ance plan for the club was
discussed and Is to be voted
on in two weeks.
The next meeting, Wednes
day, January 30 will be a so
cial event, being on the fifth
Wednesday of the month. In
addition to the noon meal, a
program and dancing are
scheduled.
All interested persons are
Invited to attend the group's
gatherings and need not be
come members until desirous
of doing so, officers point out.
The group meets each
Wednesday In the shuic build
ing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
wllh 12 noon luncheons each
meeting.
Church Women
Slate Benefit
Gold Hill - The planning
committee of the Woman's
Society of Gold Hill Commu
nity Methodist church held a
meeting at the home of Mrs.
J. G. Kofahl recently. Ar
rangements were made to
have a dinner to raise funds
for the current budget. The
event is scheduled for Satur
day, February 23 from 3 until
8 p.m. at Gold Hill Grange
hall. Those on the committee
are Mrs. Roy Eskcw, chair
man, Mrs. S. M. Christcnscn,
Mrs. Kofahl, Mrs. Cassle John
son, and Mrs. Paul Molloy.
A report will be given by
the planning committee at the
next Woman's society meeting
on Wednesday, February 13.

er cousin, was altar server.
Mr. Merrill escorted his
daughter to the altar.
Wears Silk
The bride's street length
dress was of white peau dc
sole. The bodice was fitted
and the scoop neckline was
accented with appliques which
also were used on the draped
skirt. Her elbow length veil
was held from a crown of
matching peau de soic and
seed pearls. She carried a
bouquet of white carnations
and rosebuds on a white mis
sal, a gift from the bride
groom. . ,
The honor attendant's
gown was of Kelly green peau
de soie which she wore with
matching crown and veil. Her
bouquet was of white car
nations. Red polnsettias decorated
the church.
Rtcaption Held
About 125 persons attended
the wedding and the recep
tion which was given by the
bride's parents in the Eugene
Knights of Columbus hall.
Table decorations were in a
silver and white theme and
white carnations with garde
nias and bells with streamers
decorated the hall.
Mrs. Osterman and Miss
Jennifer Espey, Medford, sis
ters of the bridegroom, cut
and served the cake.
Miss Susan Coffman served
the coffee and Miss Lynn
Shaw poured the punch,
while Miss Pat McLean took
charge of the gift table and
Miss Charlene Hubcr regis
tered the guests. All are
nursing school classmates of
the bride.
For her daughter's wedding
and reception the bride's
mother wore a beige knit
dress with natural and tniist
colored accessories. The
bridegroom's mother wore a
winter white brocade sheath
dress with matching accesso
ries. Both had carnation and
rosebud corsages.
The couple made their wed
ding trip to the Oregon coast
and Portland. For traveling
the bride chose a blue knit
dress with white wool cont.
Previous to the wedding
the bride-elect was honored
at a shower given by Mrs.
John Jensen, 522 South Oak
dale avenue, an aunt of the
bridegroom. Over 30 guests
attended, many being school
mates of the bride, accom
panied by their mothers.
Frozen Lakes Providing
Fun for Skating Fans
A January of sub-freezing
weather has resulted In skat
ing enthusiasts spending a
great deal of time on the ice.
Although the lower valley
lakes do not provide the best
skating, since thawing oc
curs during the day, those In
the higher elevations have
been smoothly frozen and of
fer a fine opportunity for this
cxhilcrating sport.
The C. H. Buffingtons and
their friends have been en
joying skating on their own
ranch on Campbell road. A
pond, nearly an acre in area
has remained frozen through'
out the present cold season
with the exception of after
noons.'
Last Sunday a number of
families arrived to share in
the sport and during the
mornings several women of
the valley have been skating
there. It was only last year
that the Buffingtons realized
their pond was suitable for
skating.
Members of the Gardener
Lake Water Ski club in the
Yankee Creek area have con
verted their talents from wa
tcr skiing to skating and have
been meeting regularly for
skating parties at the lake
About fifteen members were
to assemble there last night.
Excellent skating conditions
have prevailed throughout the
winter according to the Arth
ur Ekersons. Mrs. Ekerson
and other women members of
the ski club have gone dally
taking with them picnic
lunches. The lake continues to
furnish good skating through-

Annual Dinner
Eagle Point - The annual
Ground Hog dinner of Eagle
Point Grange, featuring the
group's homemade sausage
will be held at the Grange
hall Sunday, February 3.
Women of the Home Econom
ics club will start serving at
12 noon and have announced
that the menu will include
the traditional applesauce, po
tatoes and gravy, salad, vege
tables, rolls, and coffee and
milk, all served family style.
It has been the custom In
the past for everyone In the
community to linger over that
extra cup of coffee and their
pie, visiting with others in
the community. According to
Grange officials, there will be
plenty of hot coffee to keep
up the social tradition.
It Is the hope ot the Eagle
Point Grange to finish pay
ing for assessments and do
some much needed repair
work on the Grange hall with
the proceeds from the dinner.
Friends Visit
In Hornbrook

Wednesday at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear
were their son-in-law, Wen
dell Baker, and a friend Jim
Laffcrty, both of Portland.
The men were here to make
final plans for the home Mr.
and Mrs. Baker plan to build
on properly in the Henley
area which they purchased re
cently from Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Graves. Construction is
scheduled to begin Feb. 1.
Dinner guests Wednesday at
the Bear home, besides the
two men, were Mr. and Mrs.
Ermin Bear of Medford, and
Miss Phyllis Eplcy of San
Jose, Calif., a student at San
Jose State college.
Miss Epley and her mother
are visiting here for a few
days at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. L. F. Madison, who is
Mrs. Eplcy's sister.

their daily. Mr. Konwiser is
a comparative newcomer to
the valley and Is a breeder
of Charolais cattle more rec
ently introduced to this coun
try from France.
Six members of the Med
ford Sea Scouts planned a
skating party for this morn
ing at Lake of the Woods.

Is accompanying the young
men.
Those who planned to make
the trip are DeWayne Gier,
Robert Haworth, Merrill Hag
gard, Robert Newman, Gary
Bigham, and Ken Baumer. All
are Medford High school students.
Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Fish
back and daughter, Miss Jean
Fishback, 3826 Old Military
road, Central Point, accompa
nied by Miss Lee Ann Cham
berlain, also of Central Point,
have been skating on Sundays
throughout the season. Mainly
they have gone to Hiatt lake
but they located a small lake
near there also on the Green
Springs, where they found
good skating.
Miss Fishback and Miss
Chamberlain are freshmen
students a Crater High school.
The group took provisions
for lunches with them and
prepared it over campfircs.
At least three former pro
fessional ice skaters live in
Medford and they particularly
are enjoying the frozen lakes
and ponds.
Mrs. O. T. Heyerman and
Mrs. Tom Gerety both at one
time skated with the Shipstad
and Johnson Ice follies and
Mrs. William C. Tycer skated
with professional groups in ice
ballet shows in the Los An
geles Coliseum.
Mrs. Gerety is the former
Ruth Edge, daughter of the
late Denny Edge, former Med
ford resident who was a pro
fessional hockey player and
coach.
Mrs. Tycer is the former
Miss Dale Beebe of Klamath
Falls, who skated with her
identical twin sister, Miss
Gale Beebe. Her sister also
appeared across the country
in the Sonja Heine lee re
views and in moving pictures
with Miss Heine. Mrs. Tycer
and her family have been en
joying skating parties the past
few weeks at Hiatt lake.
Mrs. Heyerman has been
.skating almost daily at the
Buffinglon pond and last
Wednesday accompanied a
grouo of women to Lake of
the Woods. The women were
guests of Mrs. Arlon Skinner
in. the Skinner cabin at the
lake. Others on the trip were
Mrs. Myers D. Jones, Mrs.
Robert Dickey and Mrs. Buf
fi neton.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerety and
their two children Sheryl and
Chris have spent recent Sun
days at Hiatt lake, enjoying
wclner roasts between ses
sions on the ice.

Band Concert
Is Announced
The program has been an
nounced for the Lewis and
Clark college concert band
which is to appear this eve
ning at 7:30 o'clock in the
Medford First Presbyterian
church. The public is invited.
Included will be "March
Electric" by Creatore; the
chorale prelude, "We All Be
lieve in One God," by Bach;
two compositions by William
S c h u m a n, "When Jesus
Wept" and the overture,
"Chester"; "Suite From the
Royal Fireworks Music," by
Handel; "Cumberland Gap"
by Jenkins; "Variations on a
Shaker Melody," by Copland;
two chorales by Brahms, "O
World, I Now Must Leave
Thee" and "Lo, How a Rose
E'er Blooming"; "Concertino
for Percussion and Band," by
Williams; "Bequine for Band"
by Osscr and "Block M Con
cert March," by Bilik.
Members of the band come
from 23 different cities in
Washington, Oregon, Califor
nia and Colorado. Two-thirds
of the band are freshmen and
sophomores. All members are
selected by an audition in the
fall.
Allen B. Skei, instructor of
music at the college, will con
duct the band.
