MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON
FRIDAY. JANUARY 23, 1963
Placement Tests For Peace Corps Scheduled at MHS
Peace Corps placement tests
will be given in room 13 of
Medford High school on South
Oakdald ave. Saturday, Jan.
26, at 8:30 a.m.
More than 20 applications
for the examination had been
received at the Medford post
office Thursday, indicating
that at least that many candi
dates would be taking the
tests.
Persons who take the tests
will be considered for new
Peace Corps projects in Latin
America, Africa, the Far East
and in the Near East and
South Asia.
Anyone in the Medford area
interested in taking the tests
is advised to contact Leonard
Nelson, Civil Service examin
er in charge, at the Medford
post office.
Conducted ax Centers
The tests will be conducted
at 823 civil service commis
sion testing centers through-
YaNTiNes
and
Party Goods
Severn,'.
Medford, Or.
217 E. Main,
out the nation, which doubles
the testing facilities previous
ly used, according to Douglas
Kiker, chief of the public in
formation service.
Most of the jobs to be filled
at this time fall into the ma
jor fields of education, agri
culture, health, construction
and community development.
Applicants must be Ameri
can citizens who are at least
18 years old. There Is no
upper age limit. Married cou
ples without dependent chil
dren may apply providing
both qualify for Peace Corps
service.
Interested persons who have
not previously filled out a
Peace Corps questionnaire
may take the tests on a space
available basis and complete
the questionnaire after the
tests.
Two Types of Tests
Two types of placement
tests will be given. One Is for
men and women who would
like to teach in the Peace
Corps at the secondary school
and college levels. For this,
a bachelor's degree is usually
required, although the appli
cant need not be an accredited
teacher.
The general examination is
for all other Peace Corps as
signments. However, an applicant who
chooses the test for teachers
may take an additional test in
the afternoon in order to be
considered for other positions
as well.
While many of the projects
require technical skills, some
do not. Liberal arts graduates,
for example, are often assign
ed to community development
work after they receive spe
cial training, or to teach Eng
lish at the elementary school
level. People with general
farm backgrounds might be
assigned to agricultural proj
ects without being highly
skilled in any of the many ag
ricultural specialties.
GP Telephones Are
Now All Numbers
Grants Pass - Grants Pass
and Rogue River telephone
users switched to all number
calling (ANC) last week, but
it was a change "in name
only."
Glenn Kennedy, local man
ager for Pacific Northwest
Bell, explained that numbers
will still be dialed in the
same way, differing only in
the way they are written or
spoken. A typical Grants
Pass telephone number, for
instance, will now read 479
2090 rather than GR 9-2090.
New directories are now
arriving by mail, and delivery
is expected to be completed
in about a week, Kennedy
said.
Try and Stop Mo
By BENNETT CIRF-
A HUSBAND who was not exactly masterly when his wife
was around came home at about 4:00 a.m. one time to
receive the tongue-lashing he expected. Tine hour to weak
in," shrilled his wife. I
suppose you're going to
give me that old routine
about being out some
where holding a sick
friend's hand."
"My dear," said the
husband sadly, "if I had
been holding his hand,
we'd be considerably
wealthier today."
At the HlUcrest Country
Club in Beverly Hills, the
afternoon bridge games are
taken very seriously.
Geonre Burns tells of one
hand where he and his partner bid seven spades, vulnerable. One
of their opponents had recently recovered from a heart attack.
After some deliberation, he took out a nitroglycerin tablet, placed
It under his tongue, looked at his cards again, and said with a
deep Ugh, "I double."
In Miami Beach, Hotel Impresario Ben Novack asked an 8
y ear-old visitor whether he planned to swim in the pool or the
ocean. "The pool," said the boy firmly. "The ocean's too tall
for me."

From Salem:
Senator John D. Hare (Re
publican, from Hillsboro) says
YouM make the wisest choice
no matter which Chevrolet you choose!
These four different cars are alike in one important
way. Each is a product of Chevrolet Division of
General Motors. That means any one will give you
more for your money in performance, beauty and
comfort . . . plus more good news come trade-in time.
However, each of these fine cars has its own way of
being distinctive too, because each is tailored to the
interest of a certain kind of buyer. Our big Chevrolet,
for example, with its Jet-smooth ride,
luxury and styling you'd expect in cars
carrying a much higher price tag. Chevy II
with its parkable size, sparkling perform
ance and outstanding fuel economy. Corvair with
rear engine maneuverability and the instincts of a
sports car. And the dramatic new Corvette Sting Ray,
America's most exciting car becomes America's most
advanced car, now available as a two-seater coupe or
convertible. In all, the Chevrolet line presents 33 hand
some new models to choose from ... a variety designed
to suit the needs of just about everyone. So it comes
down to a question of which one suits vou
Jffi&ffififjjfijf -best. Whichever your choice, you can be
diuc it. o a wiac uuc ... auu uiie yuu ll ue
happy with every day that you drive it.

he will introduce a bill reduc
ing the Oregon personal in
come tax by 10 per cent. An
nouncing his intention to the
reporters (possibly with his
tongue in his cheek) he said:
'President Kennedy has
proposed a federal tax cut of
$13.5 billion to bolster the n
tional economy, and any tax
cut in Oregon should IM
PROVE the state's economy.
If it's good enough for Prest
dent Kennedy, it's good
enough for me."
rpHIS suggestion, sir:
-a Add to vour bill a clause
requiring that for each dollar
of tax reduction there must
be a reduction of a dollar in
public SPENDING.
That would make sense.
NOW one from Denver:
The Republican domi
nated Colorado legislature
completed passage of a bill
cutting state income taxes by
15 per cent on money earnea
in 1962. The bill is expected to
reduce state revenues by
around eight million dollars.
WATCH it.
" If the new law reduces
revenue by $8 million and the
legislature sees to it that total
Colorado spending is reduced
by $8 million, the economy of
Colorado will be strengthened
to that extent.
Former Cuban Prisoner Tells Of Atrocities
A
"Is there any reason for
James B. Donovan to pay mil
lions of dollars to Castro for
the Bay of Pigs invaders with
out specifically including the
Americans In the deal?" Mar
tino asked. "These Americans
have become the forgotten
men in the ransom negotia
tions." Martino said one of the
worst Castro atrocities took
place April 23, 1962, in La
Cabana Prison when more
than 1,600 inmates rioted in
protest against attempts to
force them to attend Commu
nist Indoctrination classes.
"Guards rounded up the 200
ringleaders and forced them
to run a gantlet with 40
guards on each side who
viciously beat them with bay
onets, rifle butts and chains
and threw them into an out
door pit without any medical
attention," Martino said, add
ing that one of the ringlead
ers, a one-legged man, subse
quently was shot.
Martino was arretted July
23, 1959, 20 minutes after he
arrived in Havana to do busi
ness for an electronics engi
neering firm. He said he never
learned why he was arrested
and the U.S. Embassy "only
gave me promises of help but
nothing else." The embassy
later was closed.

HOPEFUL sign of a possible
return to normalcy:
Four Salem police officers
were rushed to Doney Hall on
the Willamette University
campus at an early hour the
other morning when a noisy
group of male students staged
a PANTY RAID on a women's
dormitory.
The crowd scattered as the
officers arrived. No arrests
were made, but one student
was turned over to the uni
versity dean of men after
throwing a lighted firecracker
-as he should have been.
Lighted firecrackers have no
place in a panty raid.
MRS. MILDRED MEAD
HALL, house mother at
Doney Hall, told the police:
"There was no property
damage, and there were no in
juries." (She admitted that
"some women's underthlngs"
were missing.)
The officers, feeling that
all's well along the Willam
ette, left the campus at 12:30
a.m.
