'Living Entities' In Interplanetary Void Said Possible
Washington - IUPD - Space it'
self may carry the seeds of
life.
This notion - that spores or
germs or some other "living
entities" drift constantly
through the interplanetary
void in blind search of a home
-is not a new one.
It is called panspermia, and.
most biologists are skeptical
of it. But doubting something
is true is not the same as
knowing it is false:
So a group of responsible
scientists has recommended
to the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration
that "the biological explora
tion of interplanetary space
should be seriously at
tempted." Top Priority Urgad
This same group, in a study
sponsored by the National
Academy of Sciences, urged
NASA to give top priority in
its space program to the

search tor life outside the
earth.
The most likely place to
find extraterrestrial life in
the solar system is the planet
Mars, the scientists feel. But
if by any chance there is
something to the idea of
panspermia, space itself
would be worth "biological
exploration."
Panspermia is 4he brain
child of Svante August Arrhe
nius, a Swedish physicist and
chemist who died in 1927.
Arrhenius, who won the 1903
Nobel prize in chemistry, sug
gested that life is being dis
seminated throughout the uni
verse from wherever it origi
nated by the process of panspermia.
Modern belief, on the other
hand, is that life was de
veloped independently on bil
lions of planets suitably situ
ated, like the Earth, at the
right distance from a steady,
well-behaved star like the
sun.
Survival Means Unknown
Today's scientists do not
see how so-called life "dis
seminules", even if they some
how got dislodged from one
planet, could survive the
radiation and other hazards
of space long enough to mi
grate to another.
But if living entities have
embarked on space flight
only to die in the void, their
remains may still be drifting
between the planets or may
have come to rest somewhere.
In their recommendation to
NASA, the biologists said
"lunar samples should con
tain dead organisms accumu
lated from space if the pan
spermia hypothesis is valid."
And, they added, it is argu
able "that some not-yet-killed
units may be present in deep
space."
