Quite a lew people ask
...hot ran be done for chronic
relapsing pancreatitis, usual
ly Bfisouaiea
with a good
deal of pain
in the upper
part of the
: abdomen. As
! many persons
i k n o w, t h e
pancreas is the
1 1 a r g e diges-
tive gland
Alv.ree which lies
back of the stomach. Some
times, x-ray examination will
show that it is full of small
stones, and these may be help
ing to cause the pain.
In 65 per cent of the cases
In which the pancreas Is in
flamed, one finds gallstones.
Apparently, the pancreas gets
involved in the inflammatory
process which causes the dis
ease in the near-by gallblad
der. In all such cases, treat
ment should begin with the
surgical removal of the gall
bladder. This gives the pa
tient better than a SO-SO
chance of recovery, and an
added 20 per cent chance of
getting better.
In some cases, the outlet of
the duct which carries the di
gestive juices from the pan
creas into the small bowel
has to be slit and perhaps
dilated: Sometimes part or all
of the pancreas has to be re
moved, in order to give the
patient relief from severe
pain.
It is interesting that a con
siderable percentage of pa
tients with relapsing pancre
atitis suffer from alcoholism.
We know that alcohol can
destroy the cells of the liver,
and perhaps' it injures the
cells of the pancreas, too. In
spile of the fact that these
patients are told that their
life may depend on their
slaying "on the wagon," many
of them will keep going on
"benders" or they will drink
a pini or more of whiskey
every evening. Worse yet, a
. number of the patients suffer
ing from pancreatitis get ad
dicted to some narcotic. Rec
ords show thai after an opera'
tion on the pancreas, quite
a few of the patients go on
and drink themselves to
death.
Disease of the gallbladder,
with or without stones, Is a
common trouble found often
in stout women past middle
age. Or. Alvarez describes
symptoms, causes and treat
ment of gallbladder diseases
For Sun or Work
in ' his booklet, "Gallstones
