Pioneir Ointment Concocted
From Various Animal Fati
There seems no particular
reason why a "fly in the
ointment" should have been
such a catastrophe, unless we
consider the feelings ot the
fly . . . which few of us ever
do. So just why the big deal?
The fly is notorious for get
ting into things. There's noth
ing unusual about it at all,
but ointment certainly would
seem one substance the fly
would avoid.
Ointment is supposed to be
soft, unctuous and soothing
fo the human skin. It is ex
pected to relieve and heal in
flamed skin as It usually con
tains some form of medica
tion. Skin lotion was hard for
the pioneer housewife to
come by. There was no cor
ner drugstore, so homemade
remedies had to be concocted
from available materials.
Those folks who lived in
backwoods areas a few de
cades ago faced conditions
we would consider intoler
able today. They lived much
of the time outdoors and they
faced raw, biting winds when
lips, hands, cheeks and noses
chapped and blistered.
Cracked Lips
Lips sometimes cracked
open and would often actual
ly bleed. Chapping of hands
and wrists, from contact with
snow and freezing rain,
would frequently result in
physical pain. The skin be-
came rough, reddened and
sore ... so sensitive to the
touch it was painful to smile,
to cat or to bend the wrist.
All these conditions had to
be treated with home
unguents, and these all had to
be made and administered by
the housewife.
For the purpose of oint
ment making, the pioneer
housewife melted various
animal fats which served as
the vehicle for holding the
medication in contact with
the skin. Ointment without
medication were usually
called emollients and were
often scented with rose wat
er, rose petals or any other
fragrance available from the
backyard garden or from the
surrounding forest.
To make a soothing salve,
various fats and oils were col
lected, some of them impoi
sible to duplicate today. May
be this is just as well but
back then some of them came
pretty close to being good.
At least they must have
seemed good at the time.
Best of All
One of the very best ma
terials for a healing, sooth
ing emollient was rendered
bear fat or bear grease as
they called it. The family who
had bear grease on hand was
indeed fortunate. Just the
grease alone, without any
medical quality at all or
fragrance either was sup
posed to be the very best of
ointment. Of course, not all
folks had a brave hunter at
the head of the household, so
other fats had to be used.
Each claimed his was a su
perior product.
Goose grease was one of
the best, as many people
believed it aided healing
quicker than bear grease. A
few rose petals placed in the
fat while hot, added a delight
ful frangrance. Chicken fat
had many devotees, as did
lard and melted suet. But
LOST, FOUND. LOST
Solvang, Calif. (UPU-Jamcs
Mccono got a call from the
Santa Barbara County Slier
iffs office at 2 a.m. Monday
and was told his stolen car had
been found. But when he got
there, red-faced deputies told
him it has been stolen again.
they were common materials
and usually available. Chick
en fat. had an eye appeal too
it was a rich, golden yel
low in color.
There was one school of
thought which claimed there
was nothing as good for
making ointment, salve or an
emollient as good old skunk
fat. No one ever found a fly
in it, but it was soothing and
healing. It you knew it was
skunk fat,, you imagined it
had a peculiar, woodsy fragrance.
