Collie Dogs Aid
In Eye Research
Stanford, Calif. - IUPII - Col
lie dogs are helping scientists
study an eye condition which
Is affecting more and more
Americans every year.
Collies are the first known
animals in which detachment
of the retina occurs natural
ly.
In humans retinal detach
ment is afflicting an increas
ing number of persons over
50 because of the extended
life span In the United Stales.
Scientists believe five per cent
of the blind population may
have it.
At Stanford Medical cen
ter, Dr. Seymour R. Roberts,
veterinarian, and Dr. A. N.
Dcllaporta, an ophthalmolo
gist, are studying retinal de
tachment in several dozen col
lies.
Roberts thinks the condi
tion in collies may be congen
ital and that the defect may
influence the entire breed.
"At present, about 30 per
cent of all the collies In the
United Stales have eye de
fects," ho said. "Half of those
affected will probably devel
op detachment, with blindness
resulting In a large number."
He suggested that all breed
ing stock be examined and
that dogs with detachment be
eliminated from breeding
strains.
Anti-Poll Tax
Ratification Urged
Washinglon-llPll-Sen. Thom
as H. Kuchcl (R-Calif.), said
Sunday he has urged the Cali
fornia state legislature to rati

poll tax.
Kuchcl said he sent letters
to Gov. Edmund G. Brown,
Lt. Gov. Glenn M. Anderson
and Speaker Jesse Unruh urg
ing that California go on rec
ord In support of the proposal
to outlaw payment of the tax
as a requirement for voting
In federal elections.
I am confident that you
share with mc and the other
senators who co-authored this
resolution the belief that this
archaic tax. which has disen
franchised countcless Ameri
cans, must be prohibited once
and for all at the earliest op
