Powder Puff Crew
Reaches Honolulu
Honolulu - (L'PD - The 45
foot sailboat Neophyte and its
powder puff crew reached the
end of a 25-day cruise across
the Pacific today.
The Neophyte, with cx
steeplejack Lee Quinn and a
crew of four young women
aboard, dropped its sails off
Oahu Sunday. Quinn radioed
that he would pull into Hono
lulu Harbor today.
The ketch set sail from San
Francisco Bay Dec. 27 after
Quinn recruited the all-girl
crew on the theory that fe
males were more "docile"
crewmen.
The radio message ended
nearly two weeks of silence
from the Neophyte. On Jan. 1
a naval vessel encountered
the ketch but no word had
been heard since then.
Quinn plans to pick up his
wife, Mary Ann, in Honolulu,
sign off his distaff crew and
proceed on to the South Seas.
On board during the 2,100
mile voyage, besides Quinn,
were Giselle Mayer, 22; Jack
ie Miller, 24; Susan Bird, 20,
and Mrs. Carol Hope, 20.

Endometrioid Can
Caust Sterility
Endometriosis is a disease
of young women in which
bits of the endometrium or
lining m e m
brane of the
womb get out
through the
two fallopian
tubes and
start growing
on the inner
lining of the
pelvic cavity,
perhaps
around the
ovaries or on the large bowel.
These little masses of dis
placed cells are called choco
late cysts.
In many cases, they caure
no trouble, but in other cases,
they cause pelvic pain, irregu
ular and troublesome- men
struation, and an inability of
the woman .to get pregnant.
Treatment today usually
consists of slopping ovulation
for 6 months with the new
drug Enovid. With this treat
ment, the chocolate cysts will
shrink up. On stopping the
use of the drug, improvement
often continues for a long
time. Today, surgeons are less
inclined to operate than they
used to be, and especially if
the woman wants a child,
every effort will have to be
made to avoid removing the
pelvic organs.
What Is Chronic Bronchitis?
Several doctors from Tu
lane University have recently
commented on the fact that
in many cases a disease that
looks like chronic bronchitis
is really a pulmonary em
physema, a disease in which
the lungs have lost much of
their elasticity and hence are
having difficulty in getting
the air out. Also, in cases of
emphysema thousands ct the
tiny air sacs in the lungs arc
so damaged by disease that
they do not do a good job
of arcating the blood.' In the
last few years we physicians
have become more and more
alert in diagnoring emphy
sema. By chronic bronchitis, phy
sicians mean an inflammation
of the inner linning of. the
bronchi, or the tubes that car
ry air into and out of the
lungs. There is -often sortie
over-secretion of the tiny
glands that keep the lining of
the bronchi moist, and this
leads to the formation of
sputum.
The patient is likely to have
repeated attacks of coughing,
associated perhaps with mod
erate amounts of whitish spu
tum. These persons are prone
to get "colds, when they
may have some thick or yel
lowish or greenish sputum
that has pug in it. These peo
ple arc likely also to have
their bronchi irritated by sub
stances that pollute the at
mosphere, like smog. They
can be much injured also by
cigarette smoke.
Not Enough Blood
When shortness of breath
occurs, one fears that cither
the airways are .getting nar
rowed, or many of the alveo
lae (air-sacs) are being de
stroyed, or there is not enough
blood flowing through the
tiny arteries that line the air-
sacs in the lungs.
When all the patient has is
X-ray examination of the
chest is likely to show nothing
abnormal; but if there is
much emphysema, thj X-ray
man will note, first, ' the
lungs are too full of air; also,
perhaps, that the midriff, or
diaphragm, is lower than it
should be. This is because the
inelastic lungs remain ex
panded; they do not contract
well to force the air out.
In cases .of chronic bron
chitis, "bronchograms"-which
give a picture of the "bron
chial tree - can be made by
first injecting some material,
through the throat into the
bronchi, and then making
X-ray films. These will show
if there is much bronchiecta
sis - a disease in which some
of the bronchi are dilated and
perhaps full of pus.
Because X-ray studies will
not' show the earlier changes
produced by chronic bron
chitis and emphysema, in or
der to detect these, a specialist
in lung diseases may h-ve to
use tests of lung function. He
can determine the lung vol
ume, the degree of so-called
ventilation of the lungs, and
the degrees of distribution
and diffusion of the gapes in
the lung.
Unfortunately, these tests
have to be made by experts
using special instruments, and
hence they are not available
in all cities. Much study is
needed in this field.

figures in his office at Chicago. Dr. Ivy has labeled a charge
that Krebiozen is being illegally sold a "delberate falsehood".
Secretary Anthony Celebrezze of the health, education and
welfare department has notified Dr. Ivy, Dr. Stephen Duro
vic, discoverer of Krebiozen and two Chicago distributors
of the drug that an investigation is planned. (UPI)
