Captive Ouiil Together in in
Unlocked, Open-Door Prlion
The wide open door of the
long, shed-like building muit
have offered a challenge of
corts to a lone, female quail
that entered the opening.
The owner of the barn was
nearby and watched the bird
tep into the open door; he
stood for a minute, then flew
into the Interior.
' The man forgot the incident
until the next day when he
noticed the quail was evident
ly trying to get out, but in
listed on flying back and
forth in the upper part of the
tructure. In spite of the wide
open door the bird steadfastly
refused to descend down to
the level of the opening.
The next day, and the day
after that, the man again no
ticed the quail still moving
tthnut in the uoner rafters anri
boards; she was a prisoner in
an unlocked prison. Afraid
the bird would starve to death
or kill herself flying Into a
brace or some other obstruc
tion, the man climbed up Into
the upper part of the shed,
downward far enough for her
to see and fly out the wide
open door.
Waved and Yallad'

but never did it descend low
enough to go out the way it
came in. This, the man rea
soned, was contrary to bird
behavior; it would seem log
ical that the bird would fly to
ward the light, even if the
point of greatest brightness
was below its line of regular
flight.
It was not just an ordinary
door either, it was more than
a double door, plenty wide
enough to accommodate a
large truck or pieces of tall
farm machinery. But the bird
contradicted the "light-alien-tion-principle"
by refusing to
fly lower than the top of the
peaked roof of the shed.
Tired out and unsuccessful
In ejecting the quail, the man
descended to the shed-floor
and, leaving the door open as
usual, went into his house, lor
his belated, evening meal.
Heard a Quail
Several davs nassnri. rim-ino
which time the family heard
a quail calling from the mea
dow back of the house, and
later the calls seemed to come
from the back yard. The call
seemed rather sad and lonely,
as if the caller was very dis
couraged by receiving no ans
wer, and without seeing the
absent one come sneaking
through the grass and weeds
to his persistent invitation
On two evenings the family
watched a lone quail walking
in the farmyard, stopping fre
quently to call. The other
quail, the man found, was
Hill living in the shed and ap
parently finding enough food
to live on while there, but
never once did he find her on
the shed floor.
The man was watching the
afternoon when the lone quail
that had 'haunted the farm
yard so many days finally dis
covered where his little wife
was keeping herself. On that
day, the male entered the
open door; stood there for a
while, then flew inside and
Joined his mate. Evidently he
figured "if she won't come to
me I'll go In and be a prisoner
with her." For better or
worse, In freedom or captiv
ity, he was willing to be a
captive with her in an un
locked, opendoor prison.
