Patterson-Smith Rites
Held at Catholic Church
' Miss Linda Marie Smith and
David Michael Patterson were
married in 11 o'clock morning
rites December 22 In Sacred
Heart Catholic church. The
Rev. Gilbert Lulay celebrated
the mass.
. The bride is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Cyril A. Smith,
Route 2, Box 442, Med ford,
and the bridegroom is a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B.
Patterson, Oakridge, Ore.
Miss Mary Ann Olsen at
tended the bride and Richard
Patterson, Oakridge, was best
man for his brother. Walter
Harvey, Grants Pass, a fra
ternity brother of the bride
groom, seated the guest.
Mr. Smith escorted his
daughter to the altar.
For her wedding the bride
chose a white tissue wool suit
with white mink wedding ring
collar, and a white fur circle
headpiece held her veil. She
carried a bouquet of white
carnations and baby chysan
themums. Miss Olsen was dressed in
a full skirted frock of red
brocade. A red band held her
veil and her corsage was of
red and white carnations.
The altar was decorated
with red and white carnations
with white stock.
Home Reception Held
About 50 guests attended
the ceremony and about 30
were at the reception held at
the home of the bride's par
ents on Old Stage road. Mrs.
James Berggreen, Roseburg.
sister of the bride, served the
wedding cake and Miss Sue
Ann Rutherford poured the
punch.
The Smith home was decor
ated with red carnations and
white chrysanthemums.
For her daughter's wedding
and reception, Mrs. Smith
wore a royal blue knit suit
with bone colored accessories
and the bridegroom's mother
was dressed in teal blue silk.
Both had corsages of while
flowers.
The couple made their wed
ding trip to the coast. For
traveling the bride wore a
Rrey and beige knit suit with
beige accessories.

'Carnival'
Next League

The musical is scheduled for

ter. The show, open to members
of the league, has won the
New York Drama Critics Cir

In its original form "Car
nival" was a short story by
Paul Gallico, about a lone
ly waif befriended by some
puppets. Scenarist Helen
Deutsch shifted the locale of
the tale to France and con
verted the story into an en
chanting film play for a ris
ing young French star, Leslie
Caron.
Elaine Malbin, well-known
young soprano, will star in
the role of Llli. She has won
wide acclaim in the title roles
of such notable NBC opera
television productions as
"Madame Butterfly," "Sa
lome" and "La Traviata,'
and recently scored in Lon
don in a BBC production of
"II Tabarro." She also ap
pears regularly in such popu
lar television shows as the
Voice of Firestone and the
Ed Sullivan show. Miss Mal
bin also has been soloist with
many principal symphony or
chestras Including the New
York Philharmonic and Phil
adelphia orchestra.
The crippled puppet-master
Paul will be played by Dav
id Daniels, baritone. He has
appeared in such popular mu
sicals as "Plain and Fancy"
and "Call Me Madam." In
summer stock he has played
in the "Pajama Game," "Brig
adoon," the "Great Waltz"
and "Damn Yankees."

Morse, whose marriage was
an event of December 30 In
Areata, Calif., are living at

Francisco, Calif. The bride,
the former Miss Nancy Ruth
Dean, is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George Benjamin
Dean, 1324 Morrow road,
Medford. She has been living
in Sun Francisco where she is
a personnel clerk in the San
Francisco district office of
the Internal Revenue service.
Th bridegroom, a son of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Allen
Morse. Areata, is employed by
the Bethlehem Steel corpora
tion of San Francisco, as an
air conditioning tester.
The ceremony was read at
2 o'clock in the afternoon.

rites In the First Baptist
church.
Holiday decorations were
used in the church with ar
rangements of holly and pine.
Gown ol Brocade
Given In marriage by her
father, the bride wore a satin
brocade gown with bateau
neckline and bell shaped
skirt. The floor length skirt
was made with a bow train
and the fitted bodice was
trimmed with a bow at the
front. Her French illusion
veil was elbow length and
was held from a headpiece
formed of the same material
as the gown. She earned a

These trips took Mr. Patch
into wilderness areas in Brit
ish Columbia where his group
made a pack trip to the Gang
ranch in Lost valley, north
west of Clinton, B.C.
Some of the travel was Into
mountains in Canada, north
east Oregon, the Siskiyous
and the Klamath region The
slides will include hunting of
bear, moose, elk and deer.
Activities Scheduled
Last week the breaking of
the fog cloud over the valley
brought out many seniors to
the activities scheduled. Sat
urday the newest progra-n of
the center was started, a class
in contract bridge at 1 p.m.
Beginners as well a. many
who wanted to brush up on
their bridge attended the first
session and new members
may enter during the Jan
uary 19 session. The group

Style, Variety
Show for March
Phoenix-Gamma Rho chap
ter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority
held their first meeting of the
new year at the 1 'me of Mrs.
Elbert Lowry In Phoenix on
January 9.
A style and variety show
was planned. Mrs. Jack
Wheeler was elected chairman
and Mrs. Darrel Hughes will
serve as cochairman.
The chapter plans to make
the style and variety show an
annual event for the Phoenix
Talent community. It will be
held Saturday evening, March
30 at the Phoenix Community
club.
Committees were selected
and reports will be made at
the January 23 meeting.
The chapter's members are
In charge of tickets and
reservations for the Valentine
ball which will be given by
all the local chapters of Beta
Sigma Phi sorority February
9 in the Rogue Valley Coun
try club Starllte room. Mrs.
Wheeler, city council repre
sentative, announced at the
meeting that the tickets are
available. Mrs. William Knips
was selected to be in charge
of reservations.
Mrs. Hughes presented the
cultural program on music
and drama. A tape of this
year's Miss America contest
was played as the main inter
est for her subject.
Miss Marty Wyatt, Miss
Oregon for 1962, will be a
guest of the chapter at the
next meeting.

The last event for the chap
ter was the Christmas party
held at the home of Mrs.

Newcomers to the center

ter these classes in mosaic,
copper tooling, oil painting,
Spanish and knitting at any
time and programs will be
available next week. For in
formation seniors may drop In
during any activity between
the hours of 10 a.m. until 4
p.m. any day but Friday when
the center is being cleaned.
Items Donated
The square dancing class
which meets each Thursday
morning has recently been
given a three speed record
player to be used by the cen
ter. The city has furnished
a new electric heater for the
center to take the place of
two small used heaters which
had been donated to the cen
ter when it started in 1948
and were no longer usable.
An electric grill on which to
make coffee is also needed,
center committee officials
said.
The Singing Seniors will
meet today at the center at
3 o clock under the direction
of Kenneth Thurston. Any
one who likes to sing or to
listen is welcome to attend.
Thursday at 3 p.m. immedi
ately following the orchestra
practice, the executive board
of the Rogue Valley Council
on Aging will meet at the
center.
