Titan 2 rocket at a South At
lantic Ocean target early to
day. It missed.
The 10-story missile, might
iest in the U S. arsenal, ran
into upper stage troubles on
what would have been its
longest flight to date. It fell
far short.
It was the third straight
time over a period of three
weeks that ICBMs touted by
the Air Force as being "high
ly accurate" failed to go any
where near where they were
aimed.
The results were expected
to be' of interest to the federal
space agency, which is relying
on the reliability of the Titan
2 to boost its two-man teams
of astronauts into orbit aboard
Gemini capsules starting early
next year.
The Air Force contended
that "many test objectives
were achieved" with the Titan
2. It declined to say what the
objectives were, but it was
learned that the main idea
was to send a nose cone 6,300
miles.
Even by the Air Force's
somewhat flexible standards,
that one was a 100 per cent
failure. The missile missed by
hundreds of miles.
'Barrier' Broken
Titan 2, which the Air
Force claims can fly 10,000
miles or better, has never
flown more than 5,000 miles
in 10 months of tests. Today's
attempt was the second lo
break the 5,000-mile "bar
rier." The other, an 8,000-mile
effort Dec. 6, made it only
about halfway.
As with the case of a
Minuteman "instant ICBM"
which flopped Monday, the
Air Force said in a prepared-in-advance
statement that "the
cause of the malfunction can
not be determined until tele
metry data are studied."

Retail Clerks Union has an
nounced agreement on a new
two-year contract for retail
bakery salesmen in the Sa-lem-Corvallis-Albany
area.
Union secretary Don Hat
tenberg said the contract calls
for a 15-cent per hour in
crease over the two years,
bringing the journeyman rate
to $150.

Idaho Power Company was
announced Wednesday by
Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton.

The proposal filed with the
Federal Power Commission
would have Idaho Power Com
pany either pay the $2.3 mil

Oct. 10.
Idaho Power subsequently
filed a petition asking the
complaint be dismissed.
Thornton said he based his
action on a provision of the
federal power act w h i c h
makes a licensee liable for
damage occasioned to the
properly of another as the re
sult of construction of a dam.

"King Kong" over a local
