Stainless Steel

By Greek Artist
New York -iUPIU In a one

tist hand-rubs a variety of
stone abrasives on a stainless
steel sheet a technique de
scribed as unique in modern
art.
The artist is Nikos Bel-Jon
and the sheet seven feet
high and 28 feet long may
be the largest stainless steel
mural ever "painted." It will
be installed in Chicago's Mu
seum of Science and Industry
where later this year the
Amencan Iron and Steel insti
tute will unveil an exhibit.
The theme of the abstract
mural is "Steel In the Future."
It depicts what Bel-Jon de
scribes as "a central steel
like figure stretching upward
and outward to infinity
symbolizing the unlimited po
tential of steel through the un
limited vision of man."

Ancient Roman
Ships Unearthed
At Airport Site
Rome - (UPD - What waj
"economy class" like 1900
years ago?
Visitors arriving at Rome's
jet airport at Fiumicino will
soon be able to see for them
selves. The port of imperial Rome,
built by the Emperor Claud
ius, has been excavated by
archaeologists. It Is only a
stone's throw from the new
intercontinental airport.
Seven ancient roman ships
have been unearthed so far
and will go on display. Mod
ern travelers will be able to
see how passengers and
freight voyaged to Rome
about 41 A.D.
None of the boats found by
the archaeologists is in the
"expense account" or Cleo
patra's barge class. They all
are cargo and fishing boats
that give a vivid picture of
the every-day life of the busy
port of Ancient Rome.
Flat Prow
One of the ships is 59 feet
long, with a flat prow that
opened up like that of a mod
ern landing craft. A fishing
boat has a center tank that
was filled with water to keep
fish alive and fresh.
I The port and the ships .
came to light when construe- .
lion work started on the Fi
umicino airport.
The Fine Arts commission
plans to construct a pavilion
near the airport to house the
ships and model reproduc
tions of what the port of
Claudius looked like almost
2,000 years ago.
Construction of the new
airport also revealed the
massive jetty built by Claud
ius and proved that Roman
historians Scutonius and
Pliny were right. They said
the Emperor sank one of the
huge ships that carried an
obelisk to Rome in order to
make a firm foundation for
his lighthouse at the end of
the jetty. The archaeologists :
ave found the outline of the
ship.
