one, Charles A. Spraguc,

Mongrel Wails for Mailer
With 'Faith That Endures"
For 11 glorious and joyful
years tncy wanted togetnur,
man and mongrel.
For all those years they
were Inseparable, live aog
had come under the man's
care In a weak and sickly con
dition when only 10-days-old.
Feeding with a rich formula
from a bottle and zi-nour-care
restored the pup's health. He
grew and became a constant
and devoted companion.
Ihe years slipped by. The
man, a fisherman In live sum
mer and a handyman during
the winter, sought escape
from worldly problems in the
bottle that is supposed to
cheer. He drank heavily.
One night, in a drunken
slate, he slipped and fell into
a deep canal. His body was
found next morning in shal
low water near the edge, face
down. The dog - its eHrs down,
lis eyes sad and badly fright
ened - was beside the body.
Evidence was plentiful that
the dog had pulled the man
up to the bank.
Crowd Gathers
The crowd gathered . . . the
bereaved, the morbid, the
curious. No one pain any at
tention to the saddest one
there, the little mongrel dog
who for 11 years had been
the man's sole companion. No
one noticed him slinking at
the edge of the crowd. Not
understanding what hud hap
pened, the dog was neverthr-
css conscious of a great lone
liness.
Neither did anyone recall
seeing the dog al the funeral
or al the cemciery when inc
master's body was laid to rest
In a tomb. The dead man's
mother found the dog a few
days later, but for many days
he refused to eat. For hours at
time he laid flat on the '
floor, head between his paws,
eyes wide open in silent be
reavement.
The death and funeral hap
pened three years ago. The
utile mongrel dog is 14-ycars-
old now, extreme age for one
of his kind.
But he Is still faithful.
Every day, rain or shine, he
trots to the cemciery to sit
for an hour on the tomb, sad
and very much alone.
Proienca Accepted
His daily presence Is toler
ated now by the sexton. All
previous efforts to keep Hie
dog away met Willi failure.
In spite of Iihi'sM ciimmand.s,
profane language and hurled
slones, the mongrel dog, stead
fast in his loyally and devo
tion, continued his dally visits.
Our admiration is usually
boundless for those who re
main loyal to another person,
cause or principle over long
periods nf tunc. Much favor
able comment has been voiced
about "fiiilli lluil endures. "
It is an lulininililt' trait, a.id
not always associated Just
Willi humankind. Some of the
so-called lower animals dis
play it, too, for this little mon
grel dog remains faithi.il. Ho
waits, wanting desperately to
hear the beloved voice that
has been so still fur three
long years, lie longs lo be pal
led again on ihe head by a
hand he dors not know will
never pat him ngain. Never
again will he accompany his
beloved master nn daily walks
Hi I ho wnndiiiiid or along the
canal.
I'athclic thiil the Utile dog
cannot be tnhl Ihe inasler he
loves will never return. In the
meantime we console our
selves that lime heals all
things if we have 'enduring
faith."
...orn in as a congressman
i.-. tlie nation's capital, how
ever. '
In his farewell remarks at
the swearing in of his succes
sor, Justice Harold Warner
observed that when he came
on the high court the average
age was 64 and today it is 55.
Justice George Rossman, in
his 70s, is the senior member
of the court, and Justice A. T.
Goodwin, not yet 40, is the
youngest.
Former Justice James T.
Brand, who left the court to
teach In Florida and has since
relumed to Oregon, says he is
busier now than for the past
several years with service as
a hearings officer in the pub
lic utility commission, writing
a newspaper column, and
practicing law with his son.
Seating space, as always,
will be at a premium for the
inauguration. The new filing
cabinets which came in four
years ago reduced the number
of scats on the north -and
south aisles.
However this inauguration
will probably be seen by more
people than any in Oregon
history, thanks to television.
Not only are there more sta
tions in Oregon, but ambitious
coverage plans call for 12
cameras In the house cham
bers Monday when the gavel
opens the 52nd legislative as
sembly. To accomodate the planned
live television coverage, the
house will be sworn in at 10
a.m. and the senate at 10:15
a.m.
Hatfield Monday witnessed
the swearing in of a supreme
court justice, a Multnomah
circuit Judge and a Multno
mah district judge. He had
started them all on their ju
dicial careers.
The three were Arno H.
Dcnccke, a Hatfield appointee
to the circuit court In 1059
who subsequently won elec
tion to the state's highest
bench, Charles Crookham and
William C. Beers.
As Hatfield ends his first
term in office he can look
back on what may be a record
of judicial appointments for
an Oregon chief executive-
supreme court justice (A. T.
Goodwin), a newly created tax
court judge (Peter Gunnar),
18 circuit court judges, 13 dis
trict judges, 4 county judges,
28 justices of the peace and 12
district attorneys.
